Absolutely without a doubt or second thought, wood-burning! You cannot produce the heat nor the awesome smokey smell with anything different. I look forward to our first fire of the season, usually the first week in November. We have the wood insert running each day and night until mid-May. It is lots of work and lots of dust, but so very worth it.

I love love love wood burning but, in cities with all of the smog days etc imo gas would be a better long term decision. Luckily for us, we live in the country. Plus, alot of people just don't want to put up with the care and dirt of a fireplace.

Here in Montreal, wood burning is forbidden now since it is really damaging for the environment, as much as cars !

I voted "Gas" but it can depend on the setting. If you have a log cabin up in the mountains, of COURSE you need a wood burning fireplace. However, in a majority of settings gas fireplaces will be the most logical and therefore increase your home's value the most.
