I really think that it is more dependent on whether crown fits your style. We have a 5 piece large crown in part of our space (8 ft ceilings) and it makes that area look larger than the spaces without it.

We have 8' ceilings in our house and installed crown moulding. The rooms appear no smaller than they did without it; to me, it finishes the room, much like base moulding. Just make sure you don't get a large intricate profile.

I agree with Brickwood Builders. If your condo is traditional then crown molding is appropriate. On the other hand it doesn't work in a modern home or a ranch. Then again there are different molding styles that work with different home styles (craftsman, Tudor, farmhouse, colonial, etc.) You really need to research your home style before you make a decision.
