Thanks for sharing , a very helpful list for anyone with mobility issues or anyone just looking for convenient, comfortable products Grandma reluctantly moved to a condo in 2013. It was hard for her because she was sad to leave the home sh raised her family in on a beautiful acre but also because it was because she was slowly succumbing to life in a wheelchair. Did anyone ever hear of the Tower Garden before ?

Hi Cat, There are several companies that make or sell tower gardens. They all look like they will work. I have information on one that really looks good and had a long discussion with the owner of the company at the Seattle Garden and Flower Show. I will look for the information packet that he gave me and post the name when I find it. You might also look into http://accessiblegardens.org/real-people-real-gardens/raymond/ and the tables he makes and sells on line. Raymond is featured on our site and designs products that are wheelchair gardener friendly. They are loved by all the disabled people who use them. Being restricted to a wheel chair does not mean the end of gardening, just the beginning to learning a new way of gardening. We also feature plans to make your own wheelchair accessible gardens.

Here is the company that I mentioned Foody8 and their link. Their towers were very well built and also had lights that could be added to increase your growing season. The owners were very helpful and took time to talk about their product. there are also many manufacturers of stackable pots and they are not expensive at all and are based on strawberry pots that have been used for generations and use soil rather than hydroponics. Personally, I think that for easy maintenance the stackable pots on low benches or tables would be my preference as well as raised table gardens. Hope this helps - sorry it took so long - but life sometimes gets in the way! lol

Hey, thanks so much for following up with me. That Foody looked real nice.I'd say it would be better for one person like Gram. In my research i have found about 12 or so of these tower gardens and compared them all.

I went on Tower Gardens website and actually think i am going to go with that instead because at a more bang for your buck price point everything is included and ,it makes more sense to have a bigger yield so she can share it with the rest of the assisted living community which she enjoys. Also the Tower Garden is good for both indoor and outdoor and some of the others were for indoors primarily. This one comes on wheels to so it is easy for her to move around her apartment , onto the balcony, and this way she can even wheel it down to the rec room.

opheonix, you mentioned using strawberry pots- just curious if you know anything about growing strawberries ? That and watermelon are on my list of things to try this spring as I am just a novice gardener. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Strawberries are pretty easy - Watermelon are easy if you are in the right location! lol they want heat, sun and water. I have never gardened where they would have been happy. I bet your grandmother would have ideas and would love to share some of her experiences with you. I think your choice of Tower is a good one. Let us know how she does with her tower and your successes in the garden. Cherish the time you spend with your grandmother tending to the tower and learning about gardening.
