Your current floor looks nice -- what kind of material is it ?

There a many options here. It depends on your budget and personal style first and foremost. I do have one question about the sectional, did you purposely opt to position the chaise section backwards for an alternate seating option or is that the way it was intended to be? Obviously you can do various things with the sections, even separate them...Maybe try it with the end with the small rectangular pillow aligned with the back and open end toward the television like a chaise lounge? If it's the way it's meant to be I would add cushions in a complimentary brown print for interest/texture for the corner. Then I think I would mount the TV to the wall, (remove present cabinet and replace according to needs and budget), add an area rug, accent chair/chairs, a couple of lamps, window treatments, artwork, a small side table or two if possible. Can you upload a photo of the other side of the room? You might be able to reposition the sectional and have more space for seating.

I might be inclined to get a smaller, patterned ottoman to use directly in front of the sectional and relocate the large one you have now. Save it for when you have company and may need extra seating. Another couple of single chairs, in a colour to work in with your lounge and newly purchased rug will be a good start. A couple of lamp tables too.

I believe I would separate the pieces and have them face each other, or at least put the large lounger part in the other area with lots of colorful accessories everywhere. Have fun!

    Hi,
I like the idea of setting the sofa up as it was in the shop.
And since you were asking for ideas, I'm taking the liberty to suggest another window treatment. Something like blinds, rollerblinds or Roman ones.

Fofo88, I'd think paint colors are going to depend on the rug you are waiting for. do you have a pic of it ? The design on the rug might be just as important as the fact that it's black and white. I never thought I'd hear myself say this, since I'm not a big fan of 'grey' as such .. but I rather like that graphite color on the wall in the 4th pic that MGMack posted. ... Only if you're intending for your room to have a very minimalist look, though .. and assuming that you have some good natural light and your artificial light choices lean towards the very cool looking lamps posted above ! :-) .. any chance you could take a couple of pics from a little further back, so that we can see window and door placement and a little more of the room ? And let us know what else must be in this space.
@Cozy Casita, there's a photo of the rug somewhere up there. But you made me chuckle, I couldn't believe my ears either when I just heard you say 'grey'. Just when I heard your little rant about the overuse of grey over at the big green leather monster's place. But you're right, I wouldn't choose grey paint for their rooms either, whereas here.... different shades of grey would go nicely with that purple. And one wall in a graphite grey...

And fofo88, you definitely need to go looking for something on your walls. I'd go for canvasses if I were you, because art that's framed behind glass will look too cold I think. You could do with a 'soft' structure like canvas on the wall(s).

You could also look for either floor lamps or one or more end tables with table lamps next to the couch. The light from those will create a softer, warmer atmosphere.

Do you have ideas about what you would do with the large empty space in your room?

@carolins ... Haha! Yes, it was very painful having to come to terms with the awful realization that graphite grey would be a colour I'd actually like to see with this sofa !! Let's not get carried away though, carolins, I mentioned one wall and you are trying to sneak the other three in whilst I'm not able to concentrate (due to my confusion re the voices in my head whispering "Do it ! .. Suggest a grey !":-) ... "Different shades of grey .... and one wall in graphite" !! ? ... Sorry, but I'm not up to considering any more than just the one graphite wall .... and that, I'm able to conince myself, is more of a 'pale black' ! :-) ....... I just took a look at fofo's ideabooks, by the way and see that yellow is a color that absolutely has to be brought into the mix here ! ... Also, thanks for the tip off re the rug pic already being posted. ... Okay, it's 2.30 am ... It's been a long day ...... Grey ?! :-) I'm off.

fofo88, how do you feel about wallpapering one wall and painting another wall in a really dark grey?

Or a really bright and sunny yellow wallpaper?

Carolins, the sectional is brown and the rug is black and white...where are you drawing the purple from? Unless, it's my eyes that are deceiving me...which is entirely possible. fofo88, what size is the room? It seems big enough and light enough to support an accent wall in graphite, (faux leather/honed treatment would look nice as an accent wall). I'm not a fan of the trendy/overuse of gray either. ;) I would have suggested a high pile area rug. You could conceivably go with many paint options. It really depends on your personal preferences for the space. What do you want to use as your primary color in the room? I noticed your dining area is white and black, do you want to continue that combination into the living room?
MGMack, if you browse through the photos of the sectional above, I really see it as being purple in a couple of the photos and definitely in the shop. But in other photos it looks more taupe or brown. I guess I'm just hoping it's purple.

fofo88: What colour is the sectional?
I know...when I went back through I thought the shop photo had a purple cast but thought it was probably just a lighting issue? It looks like brown with black flecks to me...but now I'm wondering too. It would be very cool if it was purple! That would be fun. ;) fofo...if the sectional isn't purple, will you consider covering it for us??? lol

fofo. this was one occasion where someone's ideabooks left absolutely no doubt in my mind as to their favourite colours ! :-) The yellow and black jumped off the pages as I flicked through them !
So, the sofa is neither purple nor brown. Which again is proof that we just can't judge a colour from a photo on a screen. Dark grey is good. Purple would have been good too. Glad it's not brown. But it is grey with a red undertone, otherwise it wouldn't show up as a heathery purple in the photos?

fofo, can you post a photo of the corner that we haven't seen yet? The wall that has the TV on one side and goes to the wall that has the door. Is that just a flat wall without doors or windows?

Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks.

Oo, and I've just noticed, you have the rug. Instant coziness :-) Good!
I've been thinking which wall would be the best wall to paint in a dark grey and I think it will be the one that has the window and the through to the dining room in it. You'd have to paint the window trim white, but it will make a feature of both the window and the arch when you paint that wall dark grey. Black would be too harsh.

The other side of the room is begging for some attention too. Again, do you have something in mind for that side of the room yourself? Bookcases? Reading corner?

    I can see:
    - a small round rug or a cowhide,
    - with a (yellow, white or black) Egg chair,
    - a floor lamp
    - and a credenza
    - with a large (abstract) painting above it for instance.
Depending on budget, you can shop at Ikea and for instance turn an Expedit bookcase on its side too.

My suggestions for paint colors are white or very pale gray and possibly an accent wall of yellow or dark gray like the Silhouette af-655 Benjamin Moore carolins suggested. I'd love to see a faux finish for "urban edge" too. :) A nice sleek console table and chair or chairs on the wall between the doors can provide an extra seating area. (replace pillow and artwork with your yellow accents) Have you looked into wall tattoos? (I realize they are not for everyone;)

OMG! carolins....you're talking my language on this one for sure! We must have submitted at the same time and everything you suggested reflects what I was thinking too. ;D That sideboard is a great option. I could picture pulling out a laptop and cozying up in the corner far enough from the TV to avoid distraction but close enough to enjoy family/together time.
MG Mack, haha... yes, we're definitely on the same wavelength.
Do you agree about the wall with the window being the best one to paint in a dark colour? I've thought really long and hard about it and would like to hear your opinion. As I'm sure fofo88 will too :-)
Yes, I like that wall for the gray...because of the light coming in from the window. And the roller shade you suggested would be nice with it. But then I thought of the window in a bright white wall, having beautiful bright yellow panels and thought maybe the TV wall would be good too...with the black against it and then some white vases/accents. Which would create some drama/interest from the dining room view. I keep going back and forth. :) Either would work for me. What do you think? And I agree about one large abstract.
    Shall we ask Cozy Casita?
I have the same problem, going back and forth between accent walls, but I'm leaning more towards the one with the window in it.
And fofo88, what do you think about our ideas? Is there anything you like and are thinking about doing?
    last modified: 13 years ago
Absolutely...a tie-breaker is in order. ;) Of course fofo88 could break it too by saying "no" to our accent wall! hahaha

Haha ! .. I've been up all night working, so my judgement might be a little off ! :-) ... But I won't let that stop me ! .... I like the idea of a graphite wall holding the TV .... so that it sort of disappears when not in use, particularly if hung with black matted artwork .. as I think you mentioned somewhere ? .... However, I haven't actually scrolled back to know which the TV wall is ! ....... Does fofo know we've taken over her place (the virtual version of it at least) whilst she's asleep at night ?! :-)
Cozy C., chuckling here, hehe.... I didn't mention black matted artwork, perhaps MG Mack did? Hmm... still not convinced about which wall could be the accent one. I think we'd better see what fofo88 says.

MGMack, I like that little yellow table. Cute. If the TV wall is dark grey, the white Egg will look abfab with that as a background. With the matching footstool of course.
