Steve, what are the chances of them surviving? What are the bags of leaves for?

I don't know if they would survive if the weather warmed up as if we were now going into frost free spring. Here in Cincinnati with winter just beginning the chance is ZERO%.

The bags of leaves are to be used to keep the first 2 feet of my fig tree protected. As the year goes on the leaves on the fig tree compress and I have to get more dry leaves to add up till march when the record cold stays above 10F.

Houzz will not let me correct my initial post but that 300 gallon Cuban Shaddock is actually a 30 gallon tree

The cutting I took after the first 7F freeze appear to be dead. The trees are not worth keeping and that root stock variety is not worth grafting to so they must go.

I can smell the dead decomposition of the leaves from the cuttings. The trees in freeze are just beginning to loose their lemony smell. The bark with effort can be smeared off the trunk.

Conclusion Cuban Shaddocks cannot tolerate temperature down to 7F but all 4 of my Poncirus trifoliatas, US897, Kuharske Sitrange, and C35 root stocks sailed through the freeze just fine.

Sorry about the freeze Steve! I think I read that you said you were trying to get rid of those potted cuban shaddocks anyway? Valuable info for people to learn however, about the absolute lows they can take.

The absolute low for these trees is probably in the mid or higher 20,s

In ground Cuban Shaddock

The plan was to let these 2 trees die because the fruit it produces is not worth the time and energy to take care of the tree. The Cuban Shaddock is a low grade root stock used for its easy grafting mand its production rate of OK tasting fruits for the market place. I have no use for it.
