I am interested in a
fan trained tree as an ornamental garden feature. However, most examples that I
found are fruit trees, so I ask my questions here, hope it is OK. If I limit
the height and shape to a 5-6' circle on a short 8-12" trunk, will the tree eventually be self-supporting after a few years?
Which species are the easiest to grow, train and maintain? Are there any infertile
specimens that I don't have to spray? Thanks!

(I am in Ontario, Canadian plant hardiness zone 5a bordering on zone 5b, which is about equivalent to USDA zone 4b. The growing site is sunny from about 10 am with light dappled shade in the afternoon.)
