Help with Kitchen Design

We are looking for some help with a kitchen (see attached diagram) we are planning to renovate. It is located in a 70's era back-split and while there is a fair bit of length available to us, we think it is likely too narrow to accommodate a full island. There are two large windows which bring it a fair bit of light which we love and hope to use to full advantage in the remodel.

There are a few other items to consider:

No walls can be moved though the entrance can be widened if that helps the design

There are no constraints on placement of sinks, ovens, refrigerators save for the windows

Modern, sleek and streamlined

Down draft exhaust

Eat-in area though does it does not have to be a dedicated nook - countertop is fine and somewhat preferable

Improve communincation and interaction with folks in the dining room

Sounds like you are in for a fun project! Windows in the corner will make that section a focal point! Renovating a kitchen without moving any walls is very challenging. Have you talked to a builder to assess the cost of moving a wall? Since you are about to spend thousands and thousands, why not maximize your outcome?

The house design does not permit moving either of the 'long' walls as there is a change of elevation on one side and a garage on the other.

I mean is there an open plan at all, or is this one entry and 3 closed walls? perhaps a complete floor plan will help make your project more clear to those who will be able to offer suggestions.

Most kitchens today are not dead-ends, and investing in a dead-end kitchen may not get you the return you would like.

There is one entry (which can be widened) into the space which does have 2 very large windows which brings in plenty of light.

I happened upon a plan, in a different forum, that proposed moving the eat in area into the "back" of the kitchen where the windows are located. The rest of the kitchen would configured as a galley. This has the advantage of bringing the work area closer to the hallway and dining area though I am not certain about the location of the dine-in area.

I would make this space a Galley kitchen and put a table at the end as you mentioned. But put the table in the corner without the windows, and if you made one of the windows sliding doors you would have an exit, more light and a more functional space. If you do this plan make sure you pick the correct side of the door to slide, it is very important.

By the way if you do the u shaped kitchen you will have more countertops and storage but no seating and with all the added cabinets and countertops it will cost you more than adding a door.

Countertop seating -could- be added along one leg of the U near the entrance. Thoughts?

Yes that would be a Mirrored G shape. I like that design less though. I think it would feel a little like a lobster trap in there.
