Either combination can be stunning. I think you need to take into account the amount of light in the space and how it flows to other areas. If the area is lacking natural light I would go white and maybe have the counter mid-tone or light to open the space. If you have good light then go with what looks best with the areas around the room.

Do white cabinets with white countertops. Paint the walls a deep, saturated color. You have to turn the lights on, so you want a wall color which will not fade out on you.
