I know the days don't get "much" longer for a little bit, Greg, but the Mental Thing of being past the "shortest day" really makes a difference to me--and I'm always surprised by how quickly I start to notice it's staying light out longer!

For now I'm mostly busy keeping my--TWELVE--bird feeders full, and the birdbath filled up to the top! And potting up houseplants that I never get done in summer!

In the yard I still have some daf and Dutch Iris bulbs to get in the ground--on a day when it's nice and toasty outside! This is Denver, after all! But other than that there's mostly just a few lilies and other things that still need cutting down--on a nice day!

Am hoping to get some things winter sown--BEFORE it gets too warm out, like happened to me last year! And need to go thru my seeds and see what I need to order--I know there's at least one tomato I need seed for, and, well, I can PROBABLY find a "couple" other things!

Then there's always the Spring Cleaning I started about a month ago! Now tell me, WHO wants to do Spring Cleaning in SPRING--when they can be outside with their hands in the (cold!) dirt!?!?!

I can still plant bulbs?! I always forget in the fall. Thanks for the reminders Skybird. And I'm also very excited about the days getting longer. Yay warm winters!

You can definitely still plant spring blooming bulbs! As long as the soil isn't frozen--and your hands don't get "too" frozen while you're doing it! (I just put some of them in the day before it snowed here last week!) I got some things at Van Engelen's fall sale--which isn't until the middle of November when they're trying to get rid of their "left overs!" Got some of them in the ground--but still have more to do! If you have or get some, it's best to get them in as soon as possible so they have as much time to root before spring as possible--and be sure you keep them in the fridge, or a COLD place, till you can plant them.

Isn't it remarkable that we are all together on this Big, Round Ball?

At some point in the North, one gets to a place where there is twice as much darkness in December as there is light. Because the horizon isn't flat here, I imagine that it's my house. The http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO tells me it isn't so but they don't realize what a hole I am in. It doesn't have quite as little as 8 hours of sunlight, nor as much as 16 hours of darkness. There is some evidence that there is about an extra 24 minutes to play around with, 12 minutes on either end of day and night. sigh

For some reason, it takes the Earth a little while to wobble around and begin to tilt back towards daylight. Three days from longest night, I will have gained an entire minute. sob shiver sniff

Change really picks up in January and by February, there will be as much as a 3 minute a day gain. But, until sometime in 2017, I'll be walking my Indoor Mile ... pace pace pace shuffle turn
