My design preference is to have area rugs/runners in modern homes to create warmth and texture. Otherwise, lots of hard surfaces can start to get cold and antiseptic-looking. Modern and contemporary doesn't always mean minimal, unless that's actually the look you are attempting to achieve. The pictures attached show both a monotone or a colorful ethnic treatment in a modern look.

"should have" no. "can have" yes, definitely. There are no rules on whether or not you should or shouldn't add rugs to a hall or entry. Personally, I love them!
