Help needed to transform staircase with drywall railing!

Our new house has a massive staircase with 17 steps wide of 4 ft to upstairs with 2 plateaus and the same to go to the basement. It is currently all carpetted and suposedly no hardwood under the carpet
We received a quote at 40 k to install a hardwood staircase and railing with traditional style. It is too high for our budget by 20k. We have commited to change all floorings to dark hardwood floor. What should we do with staircase? Help pease!

I would pry away some of the carpeting on the stairs to see if there is no hardwood for sure. If there is none, then I would get a dark patterned carpet for the stairs and do the hardwood on the rest of the floors. I love this animal print:

Sisal also looks good with dark wood:

You could also look for some more quotes. Seems like a lot of money to me.

That quote seems high to me, but I don't know what material you've selected. Because your stairs runs from wall to wall, you don't have to worry about finishing the ends so installing new treads shouldn't be so difficult. If you're adding 3/4 inch hardwood to the floor surface on the main floor and the second floor, I would think you could simply put the new stair treads on top of the existing which will maintain your even height with the new floor covering. If you replace the existing treads, but add 3/4 wood to the existing floors, the bottom riser will be too short and the top one too tall.

You can use veneer plywood for the risers as all the raw edges will be covered.

    I like Ironwood's wainscoting idea

Definitely get some more quotes.. What's your location? as that will make a big difference in the price

Hardwood stairs are slippery & treacherous compared to carpeted stairs, especially if the tread is narrow. After you replace all your flooring to dark hardwood, suggest you replace stair carpet with carpeting that incorporates your floor & wall colors. There is too much contrast in the existing carpet & walls.
The present handrail looks utilitarian/functional. It could be replaced by a wood cap as suggested by Ironwood Builders. If the handrail has to stay because of building code, paint it the same color as the walls so it blends in. Wainscotting could be difficult, expensive & not have the desired affect because of the angles & elements it has to be applied around.
White wood casings and a dramatic drapery treatment would showcase the lovely big window.

I think it would be beautiful with hardwood steps and wainscot walls in white as shown in Ironwood's picture. That option should be a lot more economical!
