I think I may have suggested romans a while back. That would be my choice. I like the sofa in the long version. Consider "C" tables for it; they work well when there is no room for end tables. With the sofa being dark and closed at the bottom, a coffee table could have an open bottom similar to the bottom left idea here. with the C tables you might not want to block the traffic path with a coffee table. As for the purple chairs, since they have legs, you can add a closed table with them like the top right. You might think about corded wall lamps flanking the window behind the sofa to add light there.

Still have looking for fabric for DR roman shades, no luck yet. What color would you do for living room?

I would pull some of the lightest color from the rug up to the windows with the romans. I scrolled back to your close up of the rug, but can't really determine the exact colors - looks like gray and green. You'll have to decide which of them is the "major minor" color. That's what I'd use. If you look at it and squint your eyes, I think the light color on the roses is the major one I see. What do you think?

That may be too close to the white on the walls, so then the sage green or the gray/blue would be next, IMO.

How about the color of the ribbon that is holding the wreath together? Looks like a bit of lavender. You can get some simple cotton yardage of the colors you like from the rug and hold them up in the windows, so we can determine which looks best overall with both the chairs and the sofa.

Remember way back, register with green trees?I pull the register cover off to paint,it is a short register under cover, thought I could have cover shorten to couch height. Other side of couch has room for 20x17 table

The ribbon holding wreath is blue. Trying to pull that blue into DR with gray wall. Have been looking at different chairs for LR
  • 9 years ago
Yes I can do that tomorrow with some fabric I have
  • 9 years ago

Cross pollinating the colors between the two rooms is wise, so the gray might do well. It may also be the color to paint the backs of the shelves at the FP. Maybe you still have some of the paint left.

I thought of that also. Wasn't sure if look ok.
Here is my poor attempt, light gray and med gray?
You talk cross pollination, I need to get beige into DR not sure how. If I do blue animal print on chairs, maybe blue white beige roman shades? Or two fabrics on chairs, current chairs back not covered, thought chair seat and front back in beige and animal print on outside backs only. So many options what's your opinion?

    I have been playing

I have never chimed in about the blue, but it doesn't feel right with the gray walls to me. Did you find the blue leopard print? I suppose it is too expensive to use for faux romans in the other room... I like the blingy chandelier with your classic raised trim in the DR. Do the chairs first and then decide about the curtains. Gray for the cabinet backs will look great and your white vases will show better. That's a quick little job for this afternoon!

What color do you see DR chairs? I will play again with colors I will probably get rid of purple chairs.

If it weren't for the purple rug next door, I'd be looking at a soft yellow. With the rug to consider, I'm not sure I wouldn't pick up the purple at the windows and put a neutral on the chairs. Search Houzz for "gray dining room" and start an ideabook of ones you like. I fear the leopard will grow old very quickly.

Does the LR carpet look purple, it's really dark brown with outside wreath 3 shades of beige, inside wreath 3 shades of green, shades of pink, yellow, purple with blue bow. Will start idea board

Only you would know the exact color. On my monitor it looks deep purple, much like the chairs. What do the pix look like on your computer? The rug is the place to find your accessory and curtain/shades colors though.

Back ground color is dark brown like couch. Purple chairs definitely contrast.

Focus on the floral design for the colors you add to the decor, including the chairs. You don't want more brown as the room has enough of it. Do you have any leftover paint from the DR to paint the backs of the bookshelves? If so, do that and lets style them out. That will be quick to accomplish.

I'm not a professional designer but in my opinion the arched shelves don't need to be accented. The fireplace is the focal point and bringing attention to the shelves by painting their back walls will be a busier look that will call too much attention to the arches.

This was the original suggestion that was to tie the two rooms together by picking up the blue in the rug. And also to get rid of the dull and boring brown on the dining chairs.

Leopard print for dining chairs and blue chair for living area. I'm not seeing how the pale gray on the walls isn't working with this blue.

Everyone has their own ideas as to what would look good. Denise, you need to be happy with the results.

@leelee - the idea wasn't to accent the shelves but to provide a background for her two white vases to go up top. She wanted to use them but felt there wasn't enough contrast, so I suggested she cross pollinate a bit of the DR color to the shelves. I don't have a problem with blue in the DR if it is the same blue as the blue ribbon in the rug. My issue was more with the leopard print which I believe it will become dated, and she may tire of much quicker than a more classic design. I think it would be great as some throw or lumbar pillows for the chairs in the TV room - something easy to change out at little expense down the line. A little of the blue will go a long way any where she uses it. Her choice of course.

Animal prints have been around for hundreds of years. Not likely to ever be out of style.

Maybe the trouble is the monitor that shows brown as purple and blue that doesn't work with pale gray. Also makes a blue ribbon look lavender.

I'm sure Denise will work it out. She's tenacious!

Thanks, sorry I wasn't around for that conversation. A lot of my thoughts that had came to my mind, that carpet can drive you mad. I love changes so far have really updated and made brighter. I do like bringing the blue ribbon color into play. I have purchased several curtain for DR just not getting it right, I gravitate to bold patterns and they just don't go. Want light and airy. Have thought about leopard print on backs only and neutral color on front just for flexibility in years to come.
Husband said he will cut shelves tonight, had a time getting them out. My thought was to get them staged then decide if they need painted, easy job. Thanks for hanging in with me, feel like I need to get those curtain right before I upholster chairs. I ordered some waiting for them to come in. Any suggestions welcome, as you see I have changed my mind about things because of your suggestions (roman blinds). It great to have different eyes in these rooms.

Not sure any of these would be right for roman shades. Looking for something light with just a hint of blue and a pattern that is larger and different from the spots.

What do you think about this print? The best one so far, I didn't take picture of others they looked really bad.
I tried light linen with print as roman shade. Went a little flat, but tied beige color from LR.

    Unfortunately, this upholstery fabric.

Yes, a pale gray that matches the walls would be a good neutral. You might want the shades to recede, be quiet and not try to rival the other fabrics or rug.

I like that stripe one. Do you think the pattern on curtain makes old house look older? Trying to get away from that grandma thing LOL
  • 9 years ago
I have been playing again, I think I really like coffee table, your thoughts? Don't mind pillow, curtain still need to refine.
Decoenthusiaste is there a formula for how big for coffee table?
    last modified: 9 years ago

There are several formulas floating around. Mainly I think 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the space between the sofa's arms is a good one. 2/3 might be good with your very long sofa. It should arrive no lower than 3" below the sofa seat and no higher than level to 1" above it. Not so big that it will block the traffic flow between the sofa and fireplace. You want people to be able to walk from the doorway straight through to the chairs at the window without skirting around it. Get out the painter's tape to tape out some of these "rules" and see what works in your home.

What do you think of a glass top coffee table? It could actually hold a drink if you set one on it. I'm afraid that the one you picture above is more like a bench. It would be comfy to put your feet on but could only support a drink if you placed a tray on it. How would you use the coffee table in your home? As a foot rest or as a table?

How old are the grands? Can they be trusted with a glass table?

Is this the stripe you liked? It doesn't seem like granny. It's not trendy more classic than "modern".

I do like that table, grand babies 8 years to baby. Would you go dark or brass frame. Deco good question, as I sitting here looked over, husband has feet up on stools. HA Ha!
I ordered that bench just wanting to see size, I can take back if it doesn't work, would have to get trays. Then onto end tables and lamps, what suggestions do you think.
I have been working today trying to hide tv wires.
Yes I liked that stripe was asking about print on curtain.

Maybe hubs needs a footstool just for him, and you can use a couple of "C" tables for drinks. That will leave the floor pretty clear for the grands to run and play with no worries.

Should I get glass top end table to go in between 2 chairs or do I do something different?

The purple chairs? Yes, a glass top table would be great. Not too delicate.

Thanks, going to push your brain a bit more what kind of lamps?

    https://fredgonsowskigardenhome.com/?s=lamps

I'm sending you to a great little site to read all about lamps and see good illustrations of how to use them. I think you'll enjoy it and learn a lot about the direction to go. There are 3 separate articles under this title for each of the different kinds of lamps. Hope you get something out of it. I did.

Am I heading in right direction? I have pulled out every blue thing I own (not much). Just make shift with what I had. So excited I got bench, but they sent wrong one, should have been 62" long this is 50" long, what do you think? They also make it in a nice blue, laid curtain on it to see what color would be best. I really like bench for function, rolls, easy to sweep under, can move tray to put more feet on, and can use for snack tray. But I do worry about it keeping it clean.

Whoot finally got table and chairs done. Absolutely love it, only took 1 year LOL . Now need to finish it any suggestions on art and accessories?
