First, lucky bamboo is not a bamboo at all but a common houseplant, Dracaena sanderiana. It will grow quite happily in just water with some periodic additions of a dilute liquid fertilizer or you can replant in any good quality houseplant soil. As to size of container, I like to put plants in something large enough to aesthetically accommodate the scale. For a tall, skinny plant like the lucky bamboo, I'd pick a tall, skinny container as well.

so would the height and diameter of my plant good or should it be in a wider pot and if so how much bigger?
