I did it by a different recipe . I did not put seed in each one . I just incorporated a amount of seed in the mix and made balls with it. I threw it out in the wild. Only problem was that my cows ate the seed balls. They disappeared overnight. I used straw in my mix and they liked that even mixed with compost and clay...yummy. I did get some grass coming up in the caliche wash.

We called them seed balls. I got the recipe from "The Natural Way of Farming" by Masanobu Fukuoka. He was the original guy that developed them. Very interesting guy and very interesting theories for Farming.

I haven't done the seed balls since we are rural and seeds have a way of spreading themselves around without any help from me, but it is an idea that I like and might try some time.

I cannot believe your cows ate the seed balls. The thought of that made me laugh out loud. Silly cows.

I saw a P. Allen Smith episode on PBS just this past weekend where he showed how to make them. Seems like it would be too much seed in one spot. Maybe adding a little gunpowder and a fuse would disperse the seeds a bit :)

I like your thinking and it would be so appropriate for the Fourth of July or for New Year's Eve---just celebrate the holiday by firing off a few seed bomb fireworks.

Hahaha Lone Jack. Some people use slingshots maybe they break open on impact. I only got a quarter pound of seed and I thought if I put small amounts of seed in each ball I could pretty well cover the area I want to do. I like the fact that it hid the seeds from the birds (but not cow!). And that you didn't have to water or baby them because they're not going to get much attention in the drainage ditch . Not sure if I can do it left handed. And I'm not sure when I plant the mix. It might be something that is planted in fall. Since I haven't got it yet I don't have the package. I guess I could go back to the website and look at it.

I'm not surprised that cows would eat anything. My husband gave bread to the chickens this morning and my beagle found a way into the pen. I have no idea how she got in there since the gate was shut. Even Speckles with still in the pen. When Animals want to eat they will find a way.
