I have been growing some local seed sourced Butternut trees, Manitoba seed Black Walnut and hazelberts. Got my first nut from the hazelburt this the third year. Will be awhile yet before the others are mature enough. I had a Black Walnut that had started to flower but sapsuckers girdled the tree in late summer and I didn't notice the damage until it was to late. I ripped it out because it would die back and had a slow time of it covering limbed off branch ends. I am not sure yet if the other Black Walnuts that I have will be better. For solid zone 3 reliable nut trees ( shrub) the hazelburt is the way to go. I have no experience with yellow horn.
