My first recommendation is to turn the chair to face the windows. This may seem counter-intuitive, but it creates a conversation circle instead of a lineup wall.

As far as rugs, I found all mine at rugsusa.com and I loved their service. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just think they have really good prices and a huge selection. When you're measuring for a rug, remember that you should have at least the front legs of your furniture pieces on it. It's ok for the rug to go all the way to the wall as long as it doesn't curl up, and as long as it doesn't cover your fireplace hearth.

I love the mid-century style of sofa that you have. Don't be afraid to go with a brighter color rug, since your furniture is more muted. Because you chose such a versatile sofa and chair, you can't really mess up on the rug; those pieces will go with anything.

As an aside, the nook behind where the chair is now is the perfect place for a buffet with a couple of table lamps on either end. Just as a thought.

As for dining (yes, I am posting this separately), I actually recommend against buying a table unless you know what kind of entertaining you do. If you always eat at the sofa, skip a table and maybe make that an office area instead, or put in a fooseball table. Seriously.

If you do entertain a lot and cook for people, look for a table that will seat the number of people you usually host and that will fit in the space. You can look for modern, mid-century, or rustic-modern pieces, which should suit your aesthetic, based on your idea books.

I hope this is helpful. Don't be afraid to use a space for what you want, instead of defaulting to what it's "supposed" to be.
