what size house?....what size and eff is existing furnace?....80% eff single stage with high eff blower or if you want to spend more bux, then 80% 2 stage furnace with var speed blower...Trane mdls XT80 and XV80 or identical AmStd equivalents.

Thank you both for the advice! My house is a two story 3 br-2.5 bath with total sqft 1490. It was built in 1985.

The existing one is Rheem and it is really old, I think it came with the house. So the efficiency might just be joke. :)

I do agree that 2 stage furnace will probably be better ( I assume this means I have two thermostats to control different floors).

If anybody lives in the bay area, I would like to know how much you are paying for the cost of the equipment and the installation. The quotes I get from contractors usually vary a lot.

2 stage means a high and low BTU output for the furnace not zoning with separate thermostats for each zone...I assume you do not need AC...for your location, size of home, and moderate winter climate, I would think an 80% eff furnace, 60 KBTU size whether single stage or 2 stage. Get your ductwork inspected.

I do not have AC but want to install one. Just not sure how much that is yet. My house gets hot for about 2 months in summer, but only on the second floor. The downstairs do not need AC even when it's the hottest time of year.

York is a brand sold only through HVAC/plumbers. They do no national advertising, have no local middle-men and are usually far less expensive than the brands that do a great deal of advertising (Carrier is one of the worst for multiple middle-men). I've been very happy with the two York HVAC units in my house - first was installed about 15 years ago and bid was thousands less than all the others.
