Thanks, they are mounted on coconuts and hang outside off a fence. Temps have been 55 - 86 the last few weeks, averaging 65 at night and 80 during the day, and they get water when it rains. I supplement when it hasn't rained in a week or two. Humidity is between 60 - 80 percent.

Do they get direct sun? I'm guessing a combo of sunburn and physical damage.

I'd think they'd be generally healthier plants if they weren't allowed to dry out. Going two weeks is a long time for a phal. The high humidity helps, but I think they still need more moisture. You do have good looking roots! I've never had any luck using coconut shells. Do you soak them before mounting plants in them?

Sorry I know none of my comments addresses the markings on the leaves and that doesn't really look like sunburn either. I'll be anxious to hear what others have to say!

No problem, thanks for the advice. I have noticed after a few weeks without much rain they start to droop. One even shed some old leaves once when I let it go too long. They bounce right back after watering once or twice though. But I will keep a closer eye on it in the future.

i cut the shells in half, and then soaked them in rainwater for maybe a week? I changed the water every day or two. Then I packed the shell with lfs, and mounted them up. For the first month or so I watered every day or two. After about a month they had roots growing into the moss, and around the shell, and even into the material of the outer shell. At this point they have such extensive roots they don't show any signs of drought for at least a week, maybe longer, of heat and dry. I've been very happy with this. They've even grown better than some I have mounted on a tree.

the one hard part is watering without splashing the crown. I used a hose carelessly at first and lost a leaf to crown rot. Caught the rot right before it spread into the crown, and cut the leaf off.

i took pictures of the spots close up. I'll attach those now. The circular spots in particular concer me.

The pitting to me looks like physical damage - bugs, birds, wind etc. Not pretty, but I doubt it's a virus or disease.

Thank you all. When I noticed this damage of course my mind immediately went to virus.

I've sprayed them down with Physan, and for now at least I'm not seeing any further spread.
