Thank you Evan. I have the "Citrus bug" once again. I ordered a bunch of trees from David in Toronto for the spring . I am going to convert my three season sunroom this year to overwinter my extra trees as I think I will fill my greenhouse again soon. Losing those 5-6 year old trees was painful but it is exciting to start over. I have a question do most people feed their citrus in winter in colder climates. I had not been feeding them but when I see these beautiful trees from Lemonaid ( she feeds all year) I am rethinking it. Maggy

For my outside in ground trees I feed the roots lightly. I do not foliar feed them because it stimulate growth that the roots can';t keep up with the micro nutrients needs. I feed my indoor trees at full strength. I also foliar feed because the plants don't pull enough water through the roots and I can't keep feeding. The roots are warm and the foliage get 15 hours of light.

You know, sound alert alarm works like a charm! Saved my trees the other night for me...I will explain more later but anyone who does not have one with using a greenhouse or any subjected to cold air if they should loose heat would be nuts not to have one. Boy do I have a funny story....I took pics and I will start another thread on alarm alerts for greenhouses and cold rooms!

By the way, I don't fertilize mine, but it's ok if you do, especially when growing in greenhouses or places with lots of sunlight and warmth..In fact, many go up on dosage in pots starting about the middle of February....Just watch for mites and extended growth and maybe a lack of blooms if using to much. If using Foliage Pro should be just fine)

Hi Mike. Yes blooming trees would be hard to part with for most of us. Shows the generosity of spirit of our citrus member. I hope I can pass it forward in the future and help someone else. Mike you were going to tell me what kind of alarm to buy. I can't seem to find one. It is very mild here for Jan. I had to turn the heat down in my greenhouse.. Maggy, this is the temp stick I bought..It's the best thing I ever invested in next to the solar pool tarp! Thought this might help. It will notify you anywhere you are even away from home if the temp should drop below what is comfortable for you!

Maggy we have a weather station t we bought at Costco which has a freeze alarm I believe and the range of transmission is great . Here is a pick .

So sorry to hear about your two citrus tree's that sucks . I have done the same thing forgetting to water . In the past I watered everything the same day when I used to water with a hose now at the new house I water with watering cans so I water here and there just to many plants to do at the same time . Now I have run into the problem which ones did I water and which ones do I still need to water. I easily get confused lol . Hope that your parents are doing well and of course Bo . January is almost done buddy Yippee , spring will be here soon I hope . February here is looking like below normal booo! !

Maggy - u can try Netatmo , its similar to TempStick that Mike suggested and directly sends alarms to your smart phone . The cool thing is you can set IFTTT rules in combination with a SmartPlug(Wemo) or SmartThermostat(Nest) .eg if temp drops below 5C switch on heater n stop when it hits 15C or if humidity goes below a certain level start humidifier . Also it has a carbon monoxide sensor which is a nice addon.

Even Acurite has a SmartHub , unless u need an explicit separate display you can just use the smartHub plus a sensor and use the smartphone app for display . This also supports Text n Mail notifications but doesnt have IFTTT support.

Yes, it was soooooooo sad. I had some beautiful trees. My two lime trees were such a generous gift. They are indeed gorgeous. Yes, I did get my kishu and kieffer lime from Dave at Sage Gardens. I have been buying plants from him for years. Way back when he was in Nova Scotia. He is a very nice person and always helpful. I will contact him for replacements. Hi Hobby and Maggy. Hobby great news for us Canadians. Dave from Sage Gardens is such a nice man to talk to and his plants are fantastic. Spring is right around the corner the tree's are really waking up with growth and blossom's this is one of my favorite time's of the year . Maggy I forgot to mention we bought a huge kerosene heater in early December just an incase of a power failure, a fill up heats 12 hrs . It's is very very comforting to know I could use this as a backup if anything went wrong of course you would have to be home to start it up that's the only problem.

Hello Mikey buddy I have been doing great . I have spent most of the winter in the GH no joke best investment ever . I am going to spend a few hours in there now I have a small sound system in there so relaxing . Mikey I sure hope that your weather has been better than hours it's been mild but we have not seen the sun for almost 3 weeks now and it has snowed or rained all of those days major yuck . I cannot believe how well my tree's are doing considering no sunshine . There is going to be a major flush on my tree's like I have never seen before ton's of blossom's and growth has started which is incredible because there has been no sunshine. I took a few pics 3 weekends ago when the sun was out here are a couple and some Pages and Satuma's I picked yesterday.

Top row is Satuma's bottom tow Page.Inside on that one sunny day we had 3 weekends ago ridiculous! !! Here is a pic from today not so nice thank goodness we had the light installed when we had the GH built .
We had to tie our Sago palm it just spreads out way to far.Navel flushing away in flowers. I saw a few scale on this guy it's going to get a cleaning this afternoon. Mikey if you would like to know the rootstock of my tree's I will let you know later . I hope you have a great weekend Buddy.

Hi Mike, I didn't buy an alarm yet. I have a indoor/outdoor but will replace it with one with an alarm soon . Have had some good suggestions here. My trees from Lemonaid are doing excellent. Full of blossoms and they like their new home .They smell heavenly.

Maggy, my God, I can smell those muffins baking from here! BY the way, I will never forget the kindness and the food you sent me over the time I knew you. You have always been a special person to me. Mom says hello. I will be happy when you do get that alert so you can travel and sleep in peace...It's the best feeling in the world..Just don't ignore the alerts when the alerts when you get them if so at 3 a.m. like I did..lol What an idiot. I thought one of my friends was texting me that late at night and ignored it until I went to work the next day just to realize it was my ALERT warning me the temps was dropping too far..Of course I forgot to put the heaters on again after a warm day..Thank God it only got down to 35 that day or I would of lost everything in there..I will never do that again..lol

My Navels are putting out blossoms like that too for some reason, and even my Lemon Meyer ground planted for the first time since I have had it!! What gives? I will take pics soon.

I was wondering something?? How cool or warm to you keep it in there? How cool by night? I ask because I think it's too warm in my greenhouse for any of my citrus because of the lack of sunshine I get...I have lost every leaf on every potted citrus tree in there including branches because I think they are being grown too warm..I keep the temps in there never below 60 which might be causing WLD....None of those same trees ever dropped a leaf kept at colder temps all last winter on my porch..I am so upset about that. My special Dekopon and another almost are dead..So I am about to take them out of there and cool them off in the hopes of sparing their deaths until I can get more sunlight in there..

I never saw such a beautiful set up and such a beautiful amount of trees like yours for an area so far north!!! yes, if you could share the root stock with me then I can get some with that since your trees have been years old...I would really love that buddy.

Mike. Thank you for your kind words. You know how I love baking. I have 100's of recipes involving citrus ,of course. I will get an alarm. We will not be going away before spring. It's my husband's RRSP and Tax season so he will be busy here. I am glad you didn't' lose your beautiful trees. In the past I have kept my greenhouse in the low 50's and didn't fertilize at all during the winter and watered sparingly. They were somewhat dormant . Never had any shed their leaves. Presently with the trees I got from Lemonaid I am keeping them in the mid to high 60's and feeding them FP at a reduced rate. since that is what they are used to. No leaf drop so far but will watch for that.Hope your trees recover. It is so painful to lose a beloved tree. We get very attached to them. Just like our pets

Hello Maggy darling and Mikey. Thanks guy's. Maggy blueberry muffins yum , definitely a day for baking just love that baking scent. Maggy those oranges were delicious they went very nicely right into some beverages lol.

Mikey as Maggy mentioned just horrible loosing tree's they are like our kids I feel so bad for you my friend . Mikey actually it has been very warm in the Greenhouse this yr mostly in the low 60's day and night . There was just one or two weeks in December when the temp outside was minus 25F the temp in the Greenhouse went down to 36F at night and the high 40's in the daytime . My tree's seem to be loving the warmth although a couple of tree's have scale which I have been working on. Funny we have been complaining about our weather , I have a radio station on in the greenhouse from south Florida wanted to get that tropical ambiance well not to nice down there in the 50's and raining today. Mikey Buddy here are a few tags of mine no problems knock on wood so far with the rootstock . Most of my tree's don't say what rootstock their on.

Mike- I am facing the same with my trees in the main floor even though it's kept at South facing windows it's been so overcast these last few weeks barely any sunlight n every day most of them r dropping leaves while all the rest kept in basement at a cooler temp n with tonnes of light have none.

Brian buddy, thank you so much for all that info on the labels buddy!! How old are your trees? Are any of them over 5 years old? If so. I am a bit more relaxed about what grafts mine are on...It seems that I have never lost an Orange Tree for years but others I am not that sure of...You know, now that you mention 60's by day, I have a feeling it is getting too warm in there too early in the winter for my trees since it can reach almost 80..It seems every time it gets that warm, I loose many leaves that same day..Then too, one of my pots was getting too warm too close to the space heater..The pot was very warm...So I moved it..I lifted the trees into a sunnier spot out from the canopy of my in ground Meyer and hopefully more sunlight will make all the difference...I am thinking they will be able to handle the very warm temps if they are getting much more sunlight..

I will be sticking a chair in mine soon and play birds singing now that it's finally going to feel as cold as it should be and I will get very depressed..This winter has been easy for me with the bare ground and sunny warmer than usual days. I am just grateful we got though January unscathed!!

Maggy, you are right, they do become like pets..lol It is good to see you are keeping the temps warmer than you use too. I am thinking they are getting full sunlight and will do just fine with temps that warm. I am so happy for you. Are you getting more soon? What are you using for heat now and how are you keeping it that warm? On one space heater or two? I have to use three at times when temps drop down to the teens..At least the sun is getting stronger warming up my greenhouse much earlier in the day and warming to the point where the space heaters will kick down after it hits 60 in there..My temps have been averaging the 70;s by day when the sun is out, thank God..By the time the middle of February comes, it will average the 80's in there much earlier in the day most of the day. I can't wait!

Hi Mike, They get some sun but it has been cloudy lately. The solar cover keeps it warm. This morning it was 50 degrees in there but then went up to 67 during the day. I have one electric tower heater that powers down at 65 . I have one plug which takes care on my heater and fan. .I should have had the electrician put in another plug . I am getting more trees in the spring. I already ordered some from Phenoix Perrenials and David in Toronto. Definitely will have to use my sun room. I have only ever grown Citrus in the greenhouse in winter. Likely will have to treat them differently. Maybe because cooler temps in there , no feeding and little water. My climate is much warmer than yours as we are the most southern point in Canada . Expecting snow tonight. I know you find winter difficult when you don't have sun so hopefully you will get some soon. Maggy

Hello Mikey. Wow Mikey it's darn cold outside tonight 5F already and it's 46F inside the greenhouse definitely not much of a tropical feel in there this evening. I was in there watering some Geraniums a few minutes ago and I couldn't have exited out of there soon enough . Mikey I love your idea of playing bird calls and songs in your greenhouse that would be soooooo relaxing , my favorite bird call is from the Whip-Poor- Will such a tropical sound . Mikey my tree's seem to be loving the warmth this winter they have all started flushing ton's of blossom's and growth. My Valencia has never produced edible super sweet fruit , this year they ripened up very nicely in the greenhouse they were really good . Mikey i have 2 tree's in the Greenhouse that never flowered they are both Blood oranges well this year blooms on both . The only downside of having a warm greenhouse is the watering it seems that I cannot go 6 days without having to water their just drying out so quickly. Mike I have not lost any leaves because of it being to warm in the GH , I did loose maybe 10% of the leaves first month after bringing them in do to the adjustment from outside to inside some of the tree's never dropped 1 leave my Meyer lost about half of its leaves . Very Jealous of the winter your having here we've had snow on the ground since December 1st and cloudy all the time February looks very sunny. Mikey I have lost tree's in the past very quickly without notice from overcrowding. Those tree's with the tags in the pics are 6yrs old my Meyer Valencia and Page are my oldest the Meyer is about 14 and is grafted on what I don't know, the Valencia even older 17 yrs , Page and Valencia also doesn't mention the rootstock. Sugar loves it in greenhouse for about 20 minutes then he becomes very restless he's not much for sitting and relaxing like his daddy . Mikey how many space heater's are in your GH , I have 3 in mine and all 3 are going tonight $$$$$most of the time 2 are on and when it's sunny laugh laugh 1 heater. I hope all is well with your family . How does Bo like the winter is he an outdoor cat ? Mikey buddy love talking to you your a super good friend .

Brian, LIKEWISE buddy! I think I have known for for quite some time and it seems that you and I have almost so much in common, even down to what bothers our trees and the the things we do. Ha. Bo is an indoor cat but will sneak out once in a while. But then all I have to do is tell him to get back inside and listens complaining the whole time, like a dog...The other day he was throwing a what I thought was a toy mouse up in the air, but then decided to drop that one down on my lap after it was dead..He even left me a dead squirrel in my bed once a few weeks back..Must of got inside some how..lol I can't believe how nice the trees look! Maggy's too for what she got..I love it. I will post recent pics soon since I took some today for you and others and you can see what mines are up too.
