Stucco in SoCal is the way to go...tons of really expert, cheap (albeit illegal) Mexican labor. Get regular stucco, not the "pre-colored" stuff. LA is just too dry for cedar; cracking. bug infestation, and having to refresh the paint / stain too often. Ipe would be a great choice...if you can afford it.

Hey There: Most houses in CA are build with stucco - specially in the desert or close to the ocean. When you go to the mountain areas, you will also find cedar or other siding options. This often depends on the style of the house...

On an personal note: don't use any cheap labor - the outside walls is your first defense to protect your home from sun, rain and wind - and to protect your investment. Check out some local houses and find out who did the job...
