Area rug replacement. Lighting. Accessories to refine the area

Is that the front door to the left? I suggest you wall off that area to create a separation. Do you have more photos or a floor plan? I suggest you add some color for warmth and perhaps a painted sideboard, some paintings and a mirror or two. Judy is right about the chandelier. It is the wrong size and style for the room and the furniture and should hang 30 to 36 inches of the table. I hope the helps. Enjoy the process!

I'd get a new light fixture and pull out the table a bit.. Paint an accent wall. Get a big rug. How fun to have a blank canvas!
I'm loving y'all's feedback! Just recently moved into a new home. . More photos!
How about turning the table so it is perpendicular to the hutch
  • 13 years ago
You definitely need to centre the table. Like I said an area rug to define the space. Better ambient lighting for mood and eating. Something more chandelier like at the right height above the table. About 30 inches and some other pieces and accessories to balance the pace and invite you in

Maybe getting rid of dining table/china cabinet.. Maybe to big for area and hubs said its out dated.. What does he know, I've always received many compliment s..
Sorry but very dated. Lose top of china cabinet put up large art piece. Can you buy new furn? If so go 6-8 ft round table in expresso. With dark wood buffet. Round area rug in zebra black and white. At lest 8 ft for 6 ft table.
Light should be bigger go brush nickel. Drop to 38" above table. This room needs round table more to scale.
I am with the hubs. I would at least take out the china cabinet. I would paint the chairs black. Put a statement light fixture and the dining table needs a lower centerpiece.
Potted plant on that wall too. Plus some nice big art on wall to right in pic.
If you don't want zebra which I think would be awesome. Go a graphic print in grays and blacks. Go more contemporary your old furn is very formal. The house is more contemporary . What is rest of house?
You do not need to push furn to one side. Center more in room. But guess you are doing that for light? Do you have recessed lites? If so pull furn out more and lose chandelier.

In this case your husband is right furniture outdated. Sorry.

That's a beautiful dining room set - I hope you don't paint it! A rug to define the table area and paint the walls a medium blue-gray color would set off the furniture and floor. Maybe a larger. distinctive chandelier.
Agree, the furniture appear a bit outdated. If not able to replace, i would add some nice fabric chairs and new buffet cabinet and a large mirror.

If you can't change out furniture or don't want to remove the hutch, add to what you have. You could wash chair and china details with a metallic bronze paint. Go transitional with more modern add-ons. A modern rug, new chair seat fabric, contemporary artwork.

Beautiful example, Genevieve. Of course the furniture is dated ... it's reproduction antique .. so meant to look that way ! :-) Unless you're thinking of going ultra modern or 'Furniture Catalog Chic' (!) I'd work with what you have. Inject some colour into the room, maybe, by ridding yourself of the depressing grey paint that does nothing to show off wooden furniture and appears to be sucking the light and life out of the space. Genevieve's example pic shows, very well, in my opinion, how your furniture might look if it were not entombed in 'greyness'. :-(

I agree going with espresso table and rattan chairs.. I've been in my new home for a month, I've been brain storming for a while now.. I agree with light fixture as well, buy a new light fixture and make sure it's lowered. Thanks for feedback....

You could stencil the wall with a bronze metallic to go with bar chair tone or silver metallic and add both bronze and silver to the dining with accessories.

Rearrange the dining room table with the long side of room- i. e. centered in the room.
Agree wuth maryjennings, table would look better with long side and centered. Don't under estimate the space by choosing a smaller light fixture, choose something large .
New rug, new light, lower it. Turn table other way. Picture or iron pieces on each side of hutch.. Really cool piece of art on opposite wall..recover chairs with color from new art work.
If hubby says buy new furniture..........run, run to the store....
Have you thought about chalk paint on the chairs? I love bergere chair look very French and some cool fabric would really add some style, what style is the rest of house?

Sorry, but I'm getting rid off dining table/ china... Once i purchase a new dining table i will start a new discussion or before/ after.. Found it to be traditional for my new home... I appreciate feedback... Thank you,
  • 13 years ago
Oh what a shame ! I really like that furniture it has a lot of character to it .
Aww... Geneviene, I was iffy about it and even emotional... It seems too big for my dining area... It's on Craigslist but hasn't sold, so will see.... Love the detail on it and its unique...
I had appliances delivered and the first thing the delivery man said "I like your dining table."

Got rid of traditional dining table was hoping to go transitional/ contemporary, my interior decorator choose this espresso table/ chairs which seem rustic to me.. World market will have same chairs I purchased except wingback chairs on Jan 26th for end of table or should I go 2 pattern wingback chairs... As you can see it didn't work out w/ interior decorator when I met w/ her she didn't have her tablet with measurements, seem uncoordinated and seem she had to much work on her hands.. She told me neutrals/ espressos was too traditional but than again she chooses same for my dining area. I need help with art, lighting, decor & etc.... I like this Orb light fixture comes in bronze and & aged silver.. Thank you!

I'm not fond of the table. It's a bit bulky and traditiional. I do like the chairs. I think armchairs on the ends in a colorful print might be nice. I like the orb chandelier.
I agree with LB. How can anyone even be seated at ends of table if necessary? The pedestals on it are too bulky. The top is pretty and love the chairs. Also like light fixture.

I would have painted the chairs, table, and hutch that you had....
It was too crowded w/ hutch and my home is more transitional/contemporary, not traditional...
