Long and narrow living room - starting from scratch

Looking for ideas on how to furnish this room.

The photo was taken from the end of a kitchen counter looking into a long and narrow living room. There is no dining room in our house.

It is 11'2" wide. The length along the left is 19'6". On the right from the back right corner is 6', followed by an entry (no doors) into the space which is 4'8" wide. The length of the space taken up by the existing love seat is about 6'.

We've got three children between 3 & 7 and they do not watch television or play video games so don't plan on a television in this space. We do want to put an upright piano in the room. We also do entertain friends and family very frequently so want the space to be functional and comfortable.

One thought I had was to out in a u-shaped sectional with a right hand chaise and a really long return .... but that is about the only thought I had :)

Very much looking forward to comments and questions.

sectional is not a good idea. can you do just one couch?

Hi. Why not a sectional? Of course we'd consider a couch but we require a lot of seating.

yes the christopher lowell method of decorating! two groups then either a recliner or swivels in the middle so they can be part of either conversation.

The 6 foot wall - could that have a dining bench on it, with eating table? Chairs there, or stacked away... how many will usually sit to eat?

Possible to find a stool that adjusts heights -- from low table to your counter... but will you use the counter? ... likely a more casual look ...

Analyze by posting height of the counter -- would it make sense to continue that height with moveable counter-height table... with stools on the side [if room for them]... more photos, and drawing of space best... others are good at layouts...

With curtains hanging to sides of the window / maybe rod to center the look, you could save floor space with Ikea's hanging drum shades... flexible seating:

I am a sectional fan, guess one of a very few number. I do not recommend a u shaped sectional for your space. A sofa with chaise end would work epwell though. HERE is a link to possible layouts for a long narrow room. Not exactly like yours but will definitely give you some food for thought.

Chistopher Lowell made good use of backless settees as shown in Lydia Derhake's first pic. He called them "cross-linking devices" and put them in the middle of a long room, usually with a sofa on one side and a pair of chairs on the other side plus one or two coffee tables. Not sure your room is long enough for that treatment if you're going to put in a dining spot. If the home and windows are well insulated and there are no vents or drafts by the window, I'd put the piano on the wall left of the entry door. While I like chaise sofas, I don't think you'll want to detour around any additional parts/pieces sticking out in the traffic path. I would get a 3-seat sofa and one armchair. Group them at the piano end of the room. Use a dining table that has two upholstered "head" chairs than can be pulled to the conversation area when you have company. Arrange the table straight out from the opening to the kitchen. On the opposite 6' wall I would add a tall piece of case goods. It could be a china cabinet, secretary or bookcase. Use art above the piano and over the sofa and on the dining table wall.

If you wanted to do a dining table you certainly have room at the far end next to the window. Not the usual layout but it wouldn't look odd.

You'd want to remove the fish tank.

Add chairs that are kid friendly.

I applaud you for no TV and video games for your kids!

Hi everyone ... I really appreciate your comments ... this is a great forum!

I took another photo but from the other end so that you can observe the setup.

Appreciate the thoughts about dining area but we're set there ... the kitchen itself has a rather large nook where we've set our table and we can fit 8 - 10 chairs (latter is a bit squishy but works). This is where we dine and where the kids do their home work.

From these photos you can observe the bottom left is where the fish tank was.

The middle / top left is the counter top where we will likely put a couple stools / high chairs.

The top right shows that the space ends at a large storage shelving area which has a countertop where the kids also do their homework and other activities. We're going to put a laptop and keyboard set up there since they're actually learning programming in school (in SK and grade 1!?!).

    Thanks again in advance!

You could possibly add poufs to the room for more seating, like you see here in one of our many designs. You could also possibly do another seating area towards the windows and angle them like in the second photo.
