Ideas for the space around the Staircase

Hi, we are at a planning stage to renovate the whole house. We are going for a contemporary look and feel. But, I just can't think of anything clever to do with this indented empty wall space around the staircase. Perhaps a painting? All ideas welcome and thanks in advance:

(Ignore the carpets, wall paint, bannister/staircase. All going to be replaced.)

It's too shallow to be useful. Either get the wall rounded off, or have a piece of wood (or marble) put where the rug is, and you can decide later whether to lean a tall painting or mirror or whatever right there.

The same hardwood as whatever hardwood you choose to do the stairs in would be nice. Maybe remove the trim to keep it cleaner looking

I think a simple mirror would look good with white walls and wood flooring.

It is indeed very shallow! I like the idea of a marble there.

I also really like the idea of a mirror there. I have suggested it to Management in the past as we already have a gigantic mirror to mount. But...it was shot down with extreme prejudice. A mirror with a swarm of pendant lights could possibly work.

I wish I could, but I am fairly certain there are pipes and vents behind that wall.
