How can we make this better?!?

last modified: 9 years ago

This is the front of our house. Built in 1949 in country Victoria.

I'm after some advise on how to give it more curb appeal please?

this is what we were thinking:

to paint the whole house, clean the roof and do some minor renos to the front- maybe change the poles?, new door? What else?

We will also get a new fence-picket ? and add a path from the front to the door to the foot path.

Does anyone have any suggestions ? What should we do?or images of the same type of house that we can look at to improve it? I'm stuck

    Hey Zoe,

Well you could start by painting your house white and grey to give it a more contemporary look and if possible change the columns. Try choosing square columns it will give your house a new more modern look. Remove the barrel and add more color to your garden and if you want to keep the chair change the color to a dark brown.

    Hope this helps

A path way will look amazing, but don't make it straight. Making the path in a Radom pattern will give the illusion that you have a bigger front yard and add small shrubs around the edges of the path to give it a softer look.

Great thanks! would you Change fence too? A picket fence?

will look at colours for the house and will change the poles.

Is there away to make it look older and more interesting like this example: I just can't seem to find out house looking great out there?

Can you remove the wavy yellow piece? New paint and columns will help a lot.

It seems your house color and door are a quick fix. A front door w some kind of glass. Maybe move the one column that seems to be blocking your entrance. A stone type path to the door would pull u in. The fence is not bad maybe plant climbing roses or flowering vines-jasmine maybe. A work in progress

What a cute house, so much potential, like the colour of house in pic. I would be inclined to paint the boards around Windows white, posts etc and then just a subtle colour on body of house. Repose grey BM is nice or A light green grey. Love hydrangeas, especially white and boxwood, hanging baskets on your porch.

    Zoe,
I loved Irene's ideas, and her color with white trim. You could build a grey cobblestone walkway from in front of your front door, curved over to the driveway in a sweet, meandering curve, that arcs out away from your house. Then, in that yard space (sort of in front of your large window closest to the driveway) you could plant that out with hydrangeas, and then put a couple of bushes on the other end of your porch for balance. Then you can add any additional plants you might like.

Whatever you decide to do, please post pictures!
    Cheers,
    Fran

Thanks so much for all the great comments!

Irene- I love this colour combo and went to the paint shop yesterday to get samples. Ive painted a few parts of the house, ill add a photo below. I think we may wait until we change the fence, the collums, add the path and re plant before we paint it?... Thanks again, lovely colour!!!!!!

Fran- thanks so much for your advise. Im looking at changing the door and the screen door ! _ I didn't even think of that!. Also going to change the poles and change the plants. Ii will change the numbers too and add the pots. All Great ideas! really, thank you! My husband is a ex fence builder (now construction project manger) so he really wants to change the fence. We will do this soon- he just has little time...

Shari13 - Im unsure if we can change the way yellow part as its really holding the roof together. I will talk to my husband and see.

    Zoe,
You are very fortunate to have a husband able (and willing) to build a new fence - fun! So many possibilities! Please keep us posted ..... and add photos as you go along. Good luck! I've never commented on Houzz before, but your house and your enthusiasm had something very special.
    Cheers,

Changing your drapes in the front rooms to the same color..preferably white...and to the same style...simple panels... would give a neater appearance.

I'm not crazy about the porch posts and the thin trim around the window. Replacing both would help, I think. Plus, the blue is too much.
