What works best for me is other pots of various sizes turned upside down.

But I also keep my light set-up as flexible as possible.

Scrap wood is what I use. I have 4x4s, 2x4s, 1x4s, and some 1/2" and 1/4" pieces of pine paneling. I use a combination of all of the above at times to keep everything the same height.

In this picture I am using a little of everything. This was taken in late May last year and I only had some fall leeks and a few things for my brother in MInnesota growing indoors at the time and I only wanted to run one light.

I use old books and old VHS tapes to vary the heights. Easy to take one out when needed.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those wood pieces look perfect. I wish I had some laying around, alas I don't. VHS tapes would be good too if I had any, and I don't have any books that are garbage, and the pots I have are too big to be precise.

I use the Styrofoam blocks that come out of packing boxes... you know, like the ones that they put on the sides of televisions and appliances so they don't get damaged and to fill empty space. They are stable, lightweight, solid, come in various sizes and thicknesses, can be cut, and are pure white to reflect light. They are basically sterile, don't rot, don't harbor mold, and don't absorb water. Besides, it's reusing before recycling, and the best part... they are 100% free.

Peter - You can pick up a 8' 2x4 and 1x4 at HD for probably around $6 total. If you don't have power tools to cut them up, HD will do it for you.

Yeah, I need to stop by there anyway, so I will see what I can pick up. I do have the tools, but I will look if they can just do it for me it will be easier.

10-12" is a good length for the boards.

Don't for get things like yogurt cups and similar containers, plastic food storage containers. empty milk jugs and pop bottles can be cut to height needed.

Yeah that's true, I could probably do a lot just cutting stuff up in the recycle bin.
