The hearth pad is painted plate steel. You could order something like this from any steel yard like 'Discount Steel' if you are in the Twin Cities.

when talking to my local fireplace store, they mentioned that having a slab of stone or steel on top of a wood floor wasn't sufficient and that you should find a legitimate hearth pad or stove board with an R value... this looks much better than most of the hearth pads i've found. have you had any issues with it with regards to heat?
