Leafy Green Vegetables

Well, I'm sowing some more seed;) (Long story redacted to short story). My primary doc, who manages my coumadin levels and works in tandem with my cardiologist, approved me to increase my eating of garden greens; PROVIDED I stay consistent from one day to the next. We can monitor and adjust the coumadin dosage to meet the increased intake. So, I am making a commitment to my greens-increased diet. (As she excitedly rummages through all the leafy green seeds). I think they were just glad to get me off of my all cake, bread, pasta diet and see me eat something actually "heart healthy" again.

It is a well-established fact that in many cases heart patients can eat greens with vitamin K as long as they do so in a very consistent manner. I'm glad your doctors are onboard with you having your greens. That consistency is the key for your doctors to be able to keep the coumadin prescribed for you at the right level that matches your level of vitamin K intake. It is harder to keep the coumadin at the perfect level if you eat tons of greens one week and a lot less the next week. People who have heart devices like LVADs probably are an exception to this rule, or at least the one person I know with an LVAD has to avoid the greens regardless. My brother has an artificial heart valve and also must watch his intake of greens and keep it pretty low, but that relates as much to chronic stomach issues as to the heart valve.

Now, dig out all those seeds and get busy planting! I have tons of baby greens sprouting upstairs that just now are getting their first true leaves, and I'm excited to see the real leaves appearing.

Amy, YES! Dawn, you are exactly right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed right now, that it doesn't interfere with something else. I'm digging those puppies out!!! :)

I assume you have a list of what is highest in Vit K (kale apparently). Swiss chard is half the amount of kale. Raw lettuce is minor in comparison to both. Just how much is too much?

The doc didn't set a limit, but rather impressed upon me the need to stay consistent from day to day. I can't imagine myself eating cups of kale per day, but rather sprinkling a little into a leaf-lettuce/spinach salad, with some broccoli with dinner. I do have a booklet somewhere that the hospital pharmacist gave to me before I left, so I'll have to dig that out. I have an apical thrombus (blood clot in my heart), and A-fib as a complication after the MI, so the coumadin will have to be closely monitored. I go back to the cardiologist soon, and I'll see if he has any limits on intake.

I wanted to say that here lately when I type a reply, I'm doing something that deletes everything that I just typed. I don't know what I'm doing or hitting on the keyboard, but I get aggravated and have to walk away from the computer. So, if I don't reply, that's probably the reason.

I've had that happen many times. In my case, I think the page refreshes, which usually happens if I'm looking things up and going back and forth from the post. One time I accidentally hit contol plus something which selected the whole thing and then fumble fingers hit something else like backspace and it was all gone.

If I'm having a lot of that, or I know it will be a long post, I type it first in a notepad app and cut and paste it here. I get spell check that way, too.

I've had that happen before too, though not terribly often. It is terribly frustrating, and I do think it is this website or "them" and not "us".
