Mail order Quart size Hydrangea

I'm thinking about ordering some mail order hydrangeas from Jackson and Perkins. I would like to grow them in containers under a covered porch. Will the quart size grow and bloom the first season? I'm looking at the macrophylla. The Everlasting Revolution or Amethyst.

A quart sized plant is pretty small - barely more than a cutting. They will definitely grow but there is no guarantee they will bloom their first season.

Are those the only cultivars you are interested in? If you are open to other choices, your local nursery/garden center and even the box stores should have large, more mature plants available in bud or bloom later in the spring. And for very likely around the same price you are paying for the tiny mail order.

I would expect it to be small too. Maybe 8" to 1 foot. If it has a
health root system, it may bloom on year one (it may look a tad weird sometimes with the bloom and bush size being "off"). But it should be ok if it waits a year to bloom. The advantage of getting a bloom is that you would know for sure you got what you ordered! ;o)

I do not have one of those
hydrangeas but, I remember the multi colored blooms looked nice in pictures. Good choice. If you
find it for sale locally aaaand the price is right, it may a better value
    that way.

Of course, a healthy small hydrangea shrub should grow quickly and it may save you some $$. How much were they asking for that hydrangea + shipping?

PS - I used to relate J&P to their selection of roses. Sigh. Makes me feel sad as I recently had to get rid of a lot of roses. My area has become a hub for Rose Rossette Disease so buying these makes no sense anymore. Too bad as I liked to get fragrant ones like Double Delight and get a whiff when I passed by.

They range from $19.95-$28.00 depending on the ones I decided on. The shipping is free. Maybe I will wait and pick up at my local nursery. Are they ok to grow under a covered porch in Zone 6?

I have bought qt new hydrangeas from Joy Creek for several years and they were fine, grew and bloomed the first year. Have had really good performance from their nursery plants. Some hydrangeas can be second year and still in quart containers. Joy Creek is a small nursery located in Oregon - just out side of Portland and someone is always available to answer questions on the phone. They have a great website that is full of very helpful information.
