Energy Kinetics System 2000 Maintenance - Advice Needed

last modified: 8 years ago

I bought a house with a System 2000 NG gas fired boiler. I've owned the house for 5 years and the EK2 has been great - no problems. I recently had a technician come by to do an annual check-up on the system. This particular company is not a System 2000 dealer which was probably a mistake on my part.

In any case, they recommended that I replace the auto vents and relief valve for $459. They also said I should replace the feed valve for $562. And finally, replace the expansion tank gasket and circulator gaskets for $725. This was recommended maintenance because or corrosion that was visible. Other then these recommendation there were no problems or leaks with the system.

Does this sound reasonable, or do you think it's something I should hold off on. Maybe I should have called someone who advertises that they specialize in the System 2000.

Thank you very much in advance, for your advice

I hope you don't think I'm being a wise guy but is there a big "S" on your forehead? None of the parts they gave you pricing for are EK specific. You'll find them on all hydronic systems. Shop around if you're concerned about replacing/repairing any of the items you listed.

No offense taken. Please keep in mind that I haven't authorized any repairs. That's why I created my original post. I'm trying to avoid wearing an "S" on my forehead for this company. So your assessment is that that the prices they gave me are a complete rip-off? That's kinda what I figured. So basically any licensed HVAC person should able to handle these repairs for a lot less? Maybe half?

If even that. Keep in mind that there are only a few components on the System 2000 that are EK specific - the system manager and digital temp sensor are about it. Even if either one fails you're not totally out of luck. If the sensor fails the manager automatically goes into dumb boiler mode. If the manager totally fails there are temporary workarounds or a service board can be used to run in dumb boiler mode. Don't let anyone tell you that a replacement manager will bankrupt you either. Their trade-in program covers a good part of it.

Any qualified tech, electrician, plumber, etc can purchase parts directly from EK and get Tech Support to help bring your system back on line. All burners except for a few older gas models are over the counter so obtaining parts is not a problem.

I hope this helps put your mind at ease. You have one of the best heating systems on the market. With reasonable care it should stay that way.

to dapoppa i have a EK -2000 oil fired unit and i want to get a new fan inducer part # from ek is 10-0181. They wont sell it to me and say I have to go to a dealer and when I called one they want a 100 service fee and then also the labor and part to replace something I can do myself. Called Fasco and it is an OEM part to EK and they can't sell it either. this is unfair Any help on what to do? the fan cage wheel is 1 1/4 X 4 1/2 diam with a 1/4 bore and has 34 fins on the wheel. I even checked others and the wheel on others is only 28 fins so lesss cfm. This is a custom part from EK and they are ripping people off on this unit. Please help! I'm getting hotter than the boiler!!
