I understand that sporophyte generation in a bryophyte is dependent on the dominant gametophyte generation and that the sporophyte generation produces spores that can potentially form a new gametophyte generation (new plant). My question is, when the spores are released, what happens to that sporophyte generation? Does it remain there and release more spores later on? Does a whole new sporophyte have to form for more spores to be released? Or does the gametophyte generation not host a sporophyte generation again after the spores are released?
