If your soil drains well enough that 4" would keep the onions from drowning in a flood, then it wouldn't hurt to lower the beds a bit. Sometimes February can be very dry and often good rainfall doesn't return until March or even April. That is somewhat worrisome for the drier portions of OK. In drought years I resign myself to the fact that the onions will be smaller, and just irrigate a bit here and there to keep them going.

It is too dry. Right now, and for the past couple of hours, a friend of mine is watching a smoke plume from a wildfire that he can see from Edmond. I can see the other end of the same smoke plume from southern Love County. Actually, I could see the smoke plume from Cooke County, TX, from the high bluff just south of the Red River along I-35 right before we began the descent into the Red River Valley. The fire itself is near Pocasset in Grady County. It is estimated at 6,000 acres. I only figured out we were looking at the smoke plume from the same fire by seeing the smoke plume over part of Love County on the NextGen radar posted with the News 9 story. It is amazing we see the same smoke from two very different places. I hope this is not a bad omen of what is going to start happening more often in the absence of good rainfall.

That is so sad to hear. So sad! I just hate it when it's this dry. Everything scrambles to survive and humans, too. And when it's dry and windy and you don't post on this forum, I cannot help but worry.

As I was trimming the fence line from dried Johnson grass I couldn't help but think about fire hazard potential. We watered the garden bed AGAIN. I seeded out a ton of buckwheat in the hopes I can get some roots going to help keep it moist.
