I have Citrus outside and inside and the outside trees grow much better than the indoor potted trees. My outdoor tree are permanently in ground and get covered by glass. My zone 6b gets pounded many times to its 6b-7b lows many times often many days in a row. Setting a potted tree outside is not an option here.

Forgot to mention that I have completely left my citrumelos outside all winter long. They survived a low of 16F last month. Tough trees! I did put them under cover. They show no sign of damage. Daytime temp was back over 70F just 4 days later - winter is really weird down here!

Another thing this daytime/outside routine did was make up my mind not to get a citrus dedicated greenhouse, for now.

I will be moving my tree in and out late winter/spring as I did last year. I placed a plastic bag over my trees before moving then so it would take a half hour for the are temperature on the leaves to change. I was afraid that an instant temperature drop would cause leaf drop or sickness. I have 2 indoor trees of which one weighs 200 pounds. it will be up potted and planted in ground against the south wall of my basement on the north side of the greenhouse this February/March. My 5 gallon tree will go in and out. The in and out process worked well for me last year.

Great idea with the bag. Wow, a 200 pound tree to move and re-pot.. You must have a strong back!

The tree will be tipped on its side and rolled around until it comes out without root damage then moved outside and bare rooted in ground.

Just found out something interesting about my so called zone 7b... I was on the Burpee website to order some vegetable seeds, and they listed my planting zone now as Zone 8! So then I checked the online interactive planting zone map, typed in my zipcode, and it says I'm in Zone 8a! I know It used to say 7b.

Did Planting zones get updated recently?

I am on the border of 6a and 6b. The lowest 3.5 miles of the Mill creek is zone 6b and I am at mile 3.5. My zone has not changed.
