Sorry, I don't grow this rose. I think Ludwig's is near Pretoria? I looked up Pretoria's weather, and it is sub tropical - lowest average temps 40 degrees F, and lowest record about 29 degrees F, so I think it is at least zone 10, if not higher.

So, I would ignore anything that tells you this rose does not grow very large. My main question would be how it does in very dry summer heat with only irrigation water, instead of being in a humid climate. However, I would go for it - see what happens. This is an example of why it would be good to see more entire bush photos on HMF, instead of just lovely shots of one or a few blooms.

That makes two of us, Cori Ann! :) I bought it last year. And yes, I will be posting pictures of full plants when they become bushier :) That 's the same problem I'm running into every time I'm thinking about new rose and where to plant it...

Well guess I make 3 of us. I got mine from Palatine in Nov or Dec. She'll be going in one of the DA/similar rose beds.

I got this one last year from Palatine. It was about 4 ft. tall at the end of the summer, seems tall and narrow here so far, bet it will get bigger in your warm zone! Blooms are lovely, smell great, and did fine in the heat here - 90's and more humid than you guys are though.

I got it last spring and I'd say mine got about 4 ft tall. Beautiful blooms. It may grow taller but I prune mine back after flushes. It's beautiful. It's repeat wasn't very fast but that was its first year. I have two. Here's a small bouquet of it.

To repeat everyone else, Prettypetals, that is a gorgeous bouquet of gorgeous blooms. Now I wish I'd ordered Soeur Emmanuelle a couple of years ago when I first noticed it on Palatine's website. I can't wait to see more of your photos next year. Diane

Hi Cori Anne :-) I grow it on one side of an archway in front of my house (with Radio Times on the other side) and it works beautifully. I think the plant has been in the ground for about 1 1/2 years and has already reached the top of the arch. It also takes very well to our dry Pretoria heat and does not fry in a position where it gets mostly afternoon sun. I say go for it! :-)

Thank you so much LG! That is quite a difference from the height listed for HMF! That's amazing after only 1.5 years. I love the look of this rose over an archway! And those hips! And takes the heat!!!! Awesome. I have the perfect spot for this rose. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Ooooh!! I would love to have that hip!! Just gorgeous!! My hybrid teas don't have enough time for the hips to ripen, so I have to use hardy roses if I want to grow from seed.

I know I had big bouquet of SE blooms but I must have gotten it confused with that one from TJ. . So sorry for that!! Judy

I just looked at my list of roses I'm getting from Palantine, and I realized that I have this rose coming!!! Hopefully it won't get too large in my pot!! Being protected in my garage, my tender roses usually get larger than others' here in Alberta.

My Soeur Emmanuel aka Towering Rose Magic just bloomed for the first time. I still have it in a pulp pot as I decide where it should go. It has a wonderful fragrance and lilac pink blooms. Leaves have a little black spot which usually isn't not an issue here at all... but it's still a baby so I'm not holding it against it. Seems to be able to take full sun and dry heat very well in my yard. The blooms do look a lot like the ones you posted in your bouquet Pretty Petals. It's understandable how you got mixed up! :-)

Mine is for sure a towering rose! I pruned it back and it STILL gets over 7ft. I def need it on an arch. I absolutely LOVE the blooms though. Sooo pretty!

Wow, I'm jealous! Mine in a surviving mode right now. Holds pretty good though. Shorty, up to my knees I think. Last week it rewarded me with these tiny blooms :)

Mine sure is faded compared to both of yours. Mine seemed to look more like that in the spring, with the deeper purple-y pink, but I'm happy to have anything blooming right now with the heat!

Hi everyone, it’s so interesting to see the variations in performance with SE. My plant is grown in the UK and the wet weather often means that the buds even sometimes rot because of how full-petalled SE is, so it’s really nice to see how well your blooms opened Cori Ann! Here are mine from last year, where they actually didn’t do too badly.

It does have an interesting fragrance- very distinctive; strong (but sweet) anise, but aniseed/licorice is not my favourite essence. ;) Still, I adore this rose! I find its growth to be erect, with healthy foliage (though everything had black spot and powdery mildew this year- ESPECIALLY David Austin’s Shropshire Lad). For me, the height was about 4 feet while growing in a 43cm pot but this is only the second year since planting, and I get a sense that it can grow taller!

P.S. Mine did set some large, rustic hips....Lord only knows how because the blooms never fully open and have more petals than Cleopatra could shake a stick at!

Sean - I absolutely adore!!! the fragrance of Towering Magic!! It's one of the my favorite fragrances and smells just like Strawberry Hill. Love the look of the blooms on yours! We're much drier than England...so hopefully the blooms on mine will open - mine was a bareroot last summer. I love that you say it sets hips easily!! I would love to hybridize with it.

Lilyfinch, I dare say, Shropshire Lad is the easiest thing to propagate from cuttings in autumn....WAAAAAAY easy! But it is one rose that I am in NO hurry to have more of! It does not bloom well for me at all and is a magnet for powdery mildew. I am actually going to remove it from my arch in the UK. Normally I do quite well with roses....even difficult old ones like Empereur du Maroc. But aside from disease, I scarcely got a bloom worthy of the name from Shropshire Lad. Sorry that I cannot be more encouraging. My Madame Isaac Pereire (Hybrid Perpetual), riddled with blackspot and fighting the powdery mildew, nevertheless managed to put everything to shame in the garden.

Mine definatly had rebloom , was pretty healthy ( I can’t remember it being unhealthy ! ) and it does stand upright. In my first year it is at least 4 ft tall . I don’t think a trellis is needed. But how close to a walk? Seems like this gal wants to be big .

Vaporvac - yes...it grew backwards. Silly thing. LOL

Totoro - Well...here in zone 3...my garden and potted roses are asleep still. Although there are a few green plants struggling to get through the dirt. I have to go outside and start getting rid of the old growth from last year.

I've missed everyone here too. :) How is the site doing? Is it still losing posts and not posting pictures? That's why I left and went to garden.org. It was driving me crazy here. If things are better here...I could visit both sites.

There's still some wackiness, but mainly from phones. Pics take time, but I've determined that sometimes the file is too big so if I adjust for that it fast. It's not a problem too much, just not in the title section of a post. I don't have many issues honestly.... only typing from my phone, so I use voice recognition. I must have a strange accent or talk too fast because it records funny things! I hope you'll visit both sites.... I personally miss your infectious spirit and know many northerners have questions about keeping their pots over the winter and I'm always scrounging up your old posts. MUCH BETTER to have you sharing your hard-earned wisdom! : ))
