How to keep pesky animals out

I'm in Canada so the snow is still alive and well on the ground but I am gearing up to prep everything for my first spring plant. My question is how do I keep the turkeys out? We have about 50 who frequent our yard although they are most often seen at the neighbour's because she FEEDS them! *angry*face* (We live in the country) Her house is up for sale though so once she's gone I suspect there will be no more food. I fear that they will migrate over to my lawn to see what I have. She has a fenced yard and sometimes they fly in there (and then it's hilarious to watch them try to get back out lol!) We wanted to build raised beds. Should I put a fence around them? We plan to grow a lot so it would be an awful lot of fence but I'd rather protect my "crop."

I would suggest a smaller plot than you originally planned so you can get the hang of things before you attempt a huge garden. Yes fencing is a good Idea, keep in mind if you make a smaller plot you will want the ability to expand in the future. Dog(s) help keep critters at bay, just saying LOL There are also liquids that are biologically friendly but cause offensive odors to animals. One such product is called Liquid Fence, not sure what is available in your area- but you can find a recipe and make your own. Only 2 problems with Liquid Fence- it really stinks till it dries (which it does quickly) and it has to be reapplied after it rains.

are you able to hunt the turkeys that come onto your property?

Being in a rural setting, having a dog to help out is a good idea.

Yes, we can hunt them (only when in season) but we don't have licenses or firearms haha! We considered it initially but we're vegetarians now so we'd really rather not shoot them. Would love a dog but it's really not in the cards at the moment due to a baby on the way. The neighbour has 3 and they don't seem to deter the turkeys from coming around.
