Baby quilts

I've been lurking here forever. (I sometimes post over at the Kitchen Table.) My niece is expecting a baby. She is NOT going to find out the sex of the baby - says it'll be a birthday surprise:)

Could you please suggest different ideas for a nice baby quilt? I'm not a beginner. I used to do a lot of quilting before going back to work full time several years ago. Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestions. I also like this one I found through Pinterest. It's an Animals on Parade 2 quilt. Are appliqued quilts a good idea for baby quilts? I would expect them to be washed often. I'm also wondering if a scrappier look wouldn't be nicer than such a planned design.

I love Pin Wheels and Prairie Points for a baby. It's a free pattern on the Moda website.

I do a lot of D9P because they are fast and I usually quilt at the last minute. I also like Falling Charms because it is a fast pattern. But I love Lois' quilt and should make one ahead so I am ready. If I remember correctly, Sue (polardreams) has made a lot of adorable baby quilts, so search for her name.

I made an applique quilt for my mother, quite elaborate. She's in a nursing home and they wash and dry it by machine over and over. We were shocked at first but I see that it is holding up just fine. So don't worry about applique. It is needle turn and you have the option of taking close stitches so it's very secure.

It's a darling quilt and they'd love it. Also take a look at Chubby Chicks pattern. That one made up nicely.
