What kind of budget are you working with? It looks like you have a good layout planned, although I would consider doing something like this instead so you can take advantage of the window being under your tub.

You could use a pretty porcelain tile for your shower that coordinates with your granite or do a simple cream colored 12x24 tile with some texture and a sliced pebble floor for the shower or a mosaic for the floor, using it in a niche as well. Using a frameless glass shower door will help modernize the space. I love the look of a freestanding tub but can't imagine having to clean behind it. You'd have to stand in the tub and use a vacuum hose to get dust off the floor.

You bring up a great point about cleaning behind the freestanding tub BUT I already clean the corner behemoth that I never even use! This would be an improvement, I think.

The window is for light only - it looks onto the neighbour's side of the house so there is no view and nothing to even look at (trees, etc).

I am planning on using a frameless shower door like you suggest. I like the idea of mosaic on the shower floor but I really like the look of large (VERY large) tiles on the floor. The 12x12 I have now is so builder grade.

Do you think there would be any benefit of painting the cabinets? I could tone down the brown, what do you think? I could make them lighter, or black?

As I said, I really love the look of the free standing tub so if it works for you, go for it! I don't think I'd paint that wood cabinet. I know you don't love it, but it seems to be very good quality and I think using the right tiles will take the emphasis off the cabinet and put it on the rest of the bathroom. Take a look at Daltile Kimona Silk. I used it on my kitchen backsplash and love it. It has a very subtle pattern to it that looks like it could work with your existing granite. It comes in 12X24 and 24x24. You could use the larger on the floors and the rectangular on the shower and around the tub. I have the rice paper, which is an off white. You could find a coordinating mosaic with a bit of pattern to it for a niche and your floor.
