Marlene, I think that most Kitty litter would become pulverized over time, i.e, mush later on and sift to the bottom of pots.

I picked up a Bag of what here is called 'Floor Dry' (Diatomite) a naturally derived product sold by a Lordco (automobile parts) for absorbing spills. A friend that has been growing Orchids for years uses it.

I have used it, but I find that the particle size is smaller than my other ingredients used and feel it will just be sifted down over time.

The Growstones are something that I will try next. I know Tracy here uses them and has for quite sometime now.

Some cat litter is made of an inert mineral called zeolite which is something between pumice and calcined clay in terms of water retention. But the thing is so hard to find where I am, I had to get a bag for testing from Amazon. Plus when they are available locally, finding one that is untreated and unscented proved impossible. It works well for small succulents but otherwise not worth the effort or the cost since I can get pumice of different grades for a lot less.

Zeolite is easy to come by in oz $15 for a 25kg bag agriculture grade 4mm works well in pots dosn't brake down I have not found any kitty litter here in oz that do not go to sluch Diatomite from Mt Sylvia in Qld sounds interesting but I have not tried it yet as the Nursery grade is hard to come by in NSW and the floor absorbent partical is far to small for my likeings
