Making progress on the birds

Finally have been able to make some progress on the Raptor blocks I started at Retreat. At retreat I was able to complete the first 5, and in the last week I've done the last 2.Screech owl: (He will probably go on the back as part of the label)

Moorpork owl:

Bald eagle:

Golden eagle:

Falcon:

Great Horned owl: (he'll get black & gold circles appliqued for eyes)

Snowy owl:

When looking for more designs, I found a lady in South Africa who is AMAZING at creating paper pieced patterns! I sent her some photos for a peregrin falcon, kestral, and Barn owl. For a very low price, she created paper pieced patterns for me. They will be the last 3 I need.

All blocks will get the grey borders, and then will be placed on a background around my big bald eagle in flight.

Jen, those are absolutely beautiful. So much talent and one very lucky daughter.

It's amazing! I love the paper-pieced birds - especially the falcon and the snowy owl. This is a heirloom in the making.

That will be stunning when finished! When is the big day?

Sue~ Don't know yet when the celebration will be just yet. But after we pick a date, I know I won't have a huge amount of advance notice. I'll need time to beg someone to quilt it for me.

Those are beautiful. The fabrics are perfect. I can only aspire to that workmanship!

She is going to love it! Can't wait to see the finished quilt. Can it come to retreat this year?

Of course it'll come to retreat! Silly question!

Fabulous work, Jennifer. They all look amazing. Nice find for a paper-piecing pattern maker. :-)

Jennifer, what an amazing quilt. Can't wait to see it.

What an incredible quilt this will be. You do beautiful work. I'd love to come to retreat just to see that completed...let alone all the other fun you ladies have!

What an amazing work of art!! I had no idea one could find such beautiful and unusual patterns!! LOVE!

Beautiful bird quilt, Jennifer! A quilt to treasure forever, to remind C. of her accomplishment.

I finally finished another one. Wasn't too bad, until tonight when I was putting sections together, only to find a piece that was the wrong color. It happened to be located smack dab in the center of the block. It wasn't much fun replacing it. ;(

I think I only have one more block--a barn owl. The rest of the weekend will include bordering the last 3 finished birds and pealing paper. Then maybe getting the pattern ready for the barn owl.

Jen, did you never find an osprey pattern?

No, never did find an osprey pattern. Not sure if I'm ready to just do the ones I have and move on, or if I'll ask the lady in S. Africa to do one for me.

Jen - your birds are amazing. I was showing these pictures to Tobey and he asked why I never attempt anything like that ... then he laughed! He knows my patience and skill levels will never be up for that challenge!

Sue, that's funny. Paper piecing is one of those things that you have to do a LOT of in order to not struggle with it. I do enjoy a challenge, and some of these truly challenged me. I was real annoyed when I realized that center belly piece of the kestral was the wrong color! I HATE having to undo & redo something!

I'm really excited to see the final out come of this project. The next problem I face is that my friend won't have time to quilt this until at least June. So either I find another quilter, or I present/gift it as just the top.

I've gotten all the birds done, and here's the layout I worked up with some non-quilting friends the other day. Next is to trim the bird blocks and then stitch them and the gold frame down to the background. (can't get the picture to flip... looks fine before I load it)

    Very nice.

Try rotating the picture and then saving it with a different name. Sometimes that helps.

    Super super job, Jen.
