Spring is coming...,

last modified: 9 years ago

I dug some pots out of the leaf pile and the ones that were a year old were quite along. So, I brought them out. No use fighting nature.

Here is my early blooming corner. I pulled back the layers of leaves to allow the light & warmth in. Lots just waiting to just spring up!

Today's walk in the city had hellebores, snowdrops, some beautiful bright daffodils and tiny, tiny Tommy crocuses in bloom. The city is usually a week or two ahead of us.....

Yay! cant wait to watch them grown and bloom!

Me, too! :) Gosh, I really love Spring bulbs.

I have one early noid daffodil open plus the common white freesia trying. Tulips breaking thru. And bigger rain coming in 2 days. What I'm really watching are the new lav/yellow Dutch iris. Twelve inches of foliage. Come on buds!

Ooooo, Dutch Iris! I hope we get some pictures if they flower soon!

Here is my most advanced pot - those buds weren't so obvious yesterday.

I always thought the saying "grew over night" was an exaggeration until I started gardening!

Absolutely. They prepare all winter and when the right moment comes - bam!

Those look great, posierosie! Just when I think we are in a warm spell, we get hit with a winterstorm that is supposed to dump 8" of snow tonight.

Hi Karen, it's all over the news. I brought my pots inside this morning looking perfectly fine - none of the two inches showing. Did you get the predicted inches? Hard to imagine much of it sticking with the ground so warm.

Beautiful! I planted my first Tommie crocuses last fall, I can't wait to see them.

Am I the only one who'd like to plant bulbs on neighbours' & city lawn?? :)

The snow is not so bad. Most have melted from the roads and driveway but boy it is COLD outside now. Glad to be indoors.

Mazerolm, I am actually doing that! I'm expanding one of my gardens to keep going infront of my neighbors wall - haha! I'm hoping if my crocus look awesome , I can convince him to join in for next year.**Rubs hands together**

In the Spring, I keep thinking how much more cheerful everything would be if there were just MORE flowers, EVERYWHERE. Obviously, my opinion is considered extreme as no one seems to plant quite as much as I do.

Karen, you should hear the wind right now! Tonight is definitely quite cold and with you North of me, I don't envy you!

I've been known to throw a few seeds around.

I envy those of you in earlier spring zones! I found this pot of daffs in the garage today and brought it out to the deck. I accidentally dug these two up in the fall while transplanting.

I'm also envious of those in warmer zones, nurseries only open in May in my area. This "gardening thing" is testing my patience! :). But I do really enjoy seeing pictures: a taste of good things to come!

Looks like you will have a nice pot come Spring! Once I uncover my pots, I do take them in at night if it will get below freezing. The roots will freeze much sooner above ground than several inches below.

These pots spent a day and a half inside and just today outside as it is much warmer now. Getting bigger! I'll leave them out overnight and tomorrow as it will be mild.

I pulled the leaf cover from my early blooming bed and we have lots of buds - hard to tell, but if you zoom in, maybe you can see it's packed with shoots. I think the earliest will be the snowdrops in this bed (close up).

The prize for the earliest flower in the front garden is a little crocus in the lawn. So super tiny, I almost missed it.

Well, the week was pretty cold and I didn't follow my own advice and bring in the pots at night as I figured a few hours a day at freezing temperatures was probably ok - I was right- they are fine. However, last night the soil was hard as rock and I felt guilty so I brought them inside to thaw out. The reticulata were waiting for a warm spell....

All tucked in the daffodil foliage- I threw a few extra on top of existing bulbs and added a bit more soil - this is what happens when you get flippant!

My pots back on the steps (middle has reticulata)

My pot leaf pile - it's going to be warm today and tomorrow - I could bring them out to warm, but I like them to be behind to extend the season:

And, not a bulb at all,but pretty Spring flowers:

That hellebore looks great and I can't believe how fast your pots are growing!

I'm planning on some cleanup this afternoon, the snow just melted and because the ground was mostly thawed underneath, the bulbs just kept growing like it was spring!

Snowdrops and winter aconite were open yesterday, maybe I can find a first crocus today. We're about a month early but I won't complain until a hard frost comes and kills things back. I got brave and dragged the rosemary pots out of the garage, they'll appreciate a few days in the sun...

Those pots are going to look great when they bloom! I like seeing sprouting bulbs. After a summer dormancy I'm never completely convinced that they will actually come back.

Katob - I understand what you are feeling as I'm starting sweet potato slips indoors and looking at my two week forecast, I'm wondering why I don't just plant them outside and harvest the slips? But, then I remember- oh yeah, it's the middle of February. :/

Did you share pictures of the snowdrops and aconite? If not, I would love to see. :)

Thank you SoCal - I was thinking this thread might have a bit of a yawn factor as it's not really showcasing a flowers - more the anticipation of flowers which to me is almost as exciting.

Other pot has joined in on the fun.

A particularly pretty crocus in the lawn

There is a lot going on in your photos - the snowdrops are really lovely and I see some cyclamen also out in the garden.

The garage photo is luscious with the candy colors of Spring. Your cyclamen look amazing as well.

Love those reticulatas Posie. And the snowdrops Katob. Wow!

I put in more mixed hyacinths this year. I hope one is lavender like yours. Do you know its name? All are showing buds between their 3-inch foliage. Looks like the rain is slacking off. Twice normal rainfall was needed, but with clay soil . . . . . . . . . very saturated and compacted from the storms! Digging and weeding ahead.

Isn't the lavender hyacinth nice? It was a surprise in a mixed bag, so sorry to say no idea what the variety is. You'd think it would be easy to find out, but I really can't find a match online...

Wondered where my post went- wrong thread! Tête-à-tête in full sun a day or two ago.

Saturday my little early blooming garden - all topped with snow and looking worse for wear now

    My Pickwicks just opening

And, of course, my fence garden with Ice King almost fully reverting to Ice Follies

Oh well, easy come .....etc. Hoping the early Spring bulbs live up to their reputation of iron and the later blooming ones come through without a hitch. If not, more strength to the bulbs for next year?

A few more from today. My big pot is behind everyone else and the crocus are just blooming

My fence garden lost all the blooms, but had some in reserve. A bit of a sparse show, but there is a later one that hasn't bloomed yet so we have another wave yet to come.

My new garden looks nice. The f. Persica are coming up nicely and the bottom buds are adding on color. So very glad it didn't rot away as I only read to plant them sideways after they are going into the ground.

The double daffodil mix that went into that bed is a disappointment as all flower heads hit the ground. I took out a bunch of the flowers and they are in a vase.

Your daffs and crocus look great! Mine looks so sad after the last snow storm and temps in the teens for 5 nights just totally did the early daffs blooms. THanks for sharing beautiful pics of your garden.

Those Frits look awesome! I can't wait to see the flowers. One of these days I'll bite the bullet and give a couple a try... How do your eremus look, any signs of them yet?

too bad about the early daffs. I guess I should be happy ours weren't even up yet when all the snow and cold came. I'm still looking for snowdrops and crocus to reappear from under the snow!

Thank you! We had the southern end of that storm - I can't believe you are still under snow!

All my flowers in full bloom were on the ground when the snow melted, but I was surprised that most of the buds were still good.

The eremurus were good about a month ago, but I saw some evidence of digging right where I expected the shoots to be - I have been applying various potions in that area to deter pests - it might just come up later.(?)

I'm jealous of your crocuses in the pot. I may have to buy a few and chill them in the fridge next year.

Yes, crocus are so cute! I was making a mental note to buy a ton and spread around my perennial garden next autumn. They are really cheap as bulbs.
