The lanai has screening (like a screen door) but we also have sun shield fabric that shades where the orchid sits. Maybe the light there will be too dim. I hesitate to put it outside because of squirrels!

The lanai is under roof, not a screen roof so there is no overhead sun. Also, no morning sun, either--maybe a bad thing?

If you lived in the North, they can tolerate a little direct sun. At lower latitudes closer to the Equator, the sun is too strong. So as bright as possible with no direct sun. Whatever device you use to water, take dead aim. Use your imagination...

Just to clarify the Genera used to make your orchid after all the recent name changes.....

Brassavola, Cattleya and Prosthechea. Hopefully those will stick and there will be less name changes in future. So, complete Cattleya cultivation notes relating to Florida would be fine for where you live.

Arthurm, 5 and 9 are the two zones where we live--we are snowbirds. So, (cold) zone 5 in summer and zone 9 in winter--enjoying the sunshine now instead of snow!

Are the orchid(s) snow birds too?

It's my one and only orchid and, yes, it will be heading north with us--if I can keep it alive long enough!
