Layout Help For Kitchen Remodel

We are in the beginning stages of remodeling our kitchen. We are working with a KD and she has come up with a couple of design possibilities. I would like some feedback on the designs and/or some alternative options. I do not feel like we have landed on the right design. Neither of the options feel like a good fit. I know we have space/size constraints- but there has to be a better option! I am looking for function over form.

Our goals for this kitchen renovation are to obtain more storage, have a better flow than our current kitchen, and to have a eat in/breakfast nook area for all of us to eat together daily.

We are a family of six- two adults and four children ranging in ages from 9-18. My husband and I both cook, our 18 year old does as well but is currently away at college. I enjoy baking as well.

Our kitchen is used for cooking/ clean up, the occasional homework area. We typically host most family gatherings for holidays with an average of 20 people and informal entertaining a few times a year as well.

We would like for the kitchen to be more open- so we have considered creating a pass through/half wall design in the load bearing wall rather than removing it

We would like to knock down the wall that currently separates the kitchen and dining room. The ceiling in the current dining room is higher (96") than in the current kitchen. The current kitchen has a lower ceiling along with a soffit that contains duct work. It has been suggested that a better solution to opening up that lower ceiling and rerouting the duct work would be to move the kitchen to the current dining room. As a result both of our design options reflect that suggestion.

In the kitchen we currently have sliding glass doors. We would like to switch those out to either double or a single French door- we are open to suggestions. Windows in the current set up can be moved, changed, or eliminated. I am open to the location of the sink as well.

Can you also post a plan of your full floor and what is off the kitchen

cp - you beat me to it, sister :-)

Also, if you feel comfortable posting a few photos they help A LOT to understand your space.

If you decide to use the current kitchen area and can move the exterior door to the right of the bump here's another idea.

I'm thinking a 40x72 table that can extend when you have company.

The island is on casters and can be for trash/recycle.

Can you eliminate the doorway between the kitchen and the entryway? Maybe move it to the left?

Here are some pictures of the spaces and plan of the adjoining spaces. I apologize for the heavy picture load! Thank you to mama goose and sena01 for those great options! I welcome any others!

We considered removing that doorway but ultimately decided against it because right outside of that door are stairs leading to our family room. The entrance from our attached garage opens directly into this family room. So, for example, when we get groceries our path is garage, through doorway into family room, up the stairs and into kitchen. If we remove this door we would have to walk through our formal living room (adjacent to kitchen) in order to enter the kitchen. Hopefully that makes some sense! If removing that doorway seems to be the lesser of all evils, then we would definitely revisit the idea!

I think if you remove that wall between the dining and kitchen, you won't feel the need to seat all 6 of you in the kitchen proper. Here's a suggestion that gives you counter seating for four in the kitchen. The Ikea Planner is limited in the shape of the room, but imagine that 87x24" bump out extends the peninsula for one more stool...

    Is this a tri-level layout?

Banquette seating for 6+ sounds awkward and uncomfortable to me.

Yes it is a tri-level, benjesbride. Thank you for that layout! A contractor will be coming to look at the lower ceiling and soffit area in the current kitchen. We hopefully will get a better idea of how feasible it is to reroute all of the ductwork that is up there so we can raise the ceiling to 8' and put in taller upper cabinets.

    Our last house was a Tri-level :-)
