I do alot of 50x60 - Approximately! and piece the back. I have never used fleece on the back - or minky. Maybe someday!

I like to make a good generous lap size quilt for most donations. I always piece the back, usually with muslin and sometimes including scraps left over from the front. 48 or 50" times 60" is a good size I think.

For some reason it seems like almost all my quilts wind up right around 80 x 80 inches, give or take a few. So that means most likely a pieced backing. I've only made one quilt with a fleece backing, it just happened to be small enough. Sometimes when I'm not very concerned about how the backing looks, I keep wide muslin on hand to keep from piecing. I need to try to train myself to go smaller, huh?

I just finished a string quilt which measures about 54x70. So most of the chemo quilts I make are about that size, or occasionally, they get a tad bigger. My backings are flannelette and I use two widths with a seam sideways across the middle. I end up with lots of largish pieces which I plan to piece when I can.

I tend to make queen size in pieced quilts and they stack up here till I see a grandchild or friend who doesn't have one yet. I also make wallhangings just for me and they tend to be about 48 x 60.

Thanks for your input everyone. I've been collecting ideas of various ways to increase the width of fabric as I usually just keep making the quilt top until I think it's done. lol Not much planning ahead for me. Fleece, sheets, regular/wide width fabric, muslin.......it all works for me.
