starting petunias from seed

I have searched the forums looking for advice on starting petunias. I will be starting them in a room without windows, I have been told they need light to germinate, should I put them under grow lights as soon as I plant the seeds, or wait till they germinate?

Surface seed them, don't cover, and place under light right then. Leave under the lights 24 hrs a day until they germinate and then you can cut it back to 16 hrs a day.

Much easier if you just winter sow them so check out that forum here.

They also need bottom heat. Depending on your light intensity and air temperature after germination, you can keep the lights on for 24 hrs a day.
