Fireplace hearth material

We are remodeling our house and took up the slate stone that was in front of fireplace. We are leaving the black tile around the fireplace itself but am trying to figure out what tile color to use in front. I would appreciate any suggestions...The floor in the living room is wood.

What is the type of floor that it will butt up to & color. Out of curiosity why did you take up the slate? Are the walls and fireplace surround staying the same?

I believe the best look would be black tile again if you can find it.

here is the absolute black (this is polished)

piece of black slate. also look into black ostrich quartzite.

I would keep it black. it looks great against the wood and contrast w/the white, plus it matches the black around the FP

Thank you all for your suggestions. My husband had suggested black but just wanted reassurance that we were on the right track.We took up the two tone grey slate floors because they were dated and ugly.

i think the black is best choice. looks the best w/the wood floors and the white wall/mantel.
