I prefer no headboard.

A headboard will protect the wall and makes it easier to sit up and read in bed. I would paint the headboard black and use it without the sign. If you can't do without the saying, then stencil it on the black headboard. (Your son won't be able to read it though because they don't each cursive writing anymore. LOL)

I'd remove the headboard and curtains, painting the entire wall with black chalkboard paint and let him have fun with it when he's old enough not to eat chalk! You'll have to change the door color though. He won't be able to tell which one he can write and draw on.

I never like a bed without a headboard so paint it I am not a lover of pictures hung in a collage but i love the way you put those together keep in mind his choice of favorite colors will change yearly I also would for now get rid of the chair it is a hazard for climbing and make sure the dresser and even the desk are tethered to the wall

I would paint headboard black...since room is small would push curtain rods out as far as possible and not swag curtains to allow in as much light as possible. Shorter lamp if you have one. Maybe move the cow pic (love it) to the opposite wall and redo the grouping and perhaps add the "you are loved" plaque to it.

Keep the headboard! You could paint it one of the contrasting colors from the box at the end of the bed.

Adorable room!! I think given the cozy size of the space the headboard makes the bed area look a little crowded. That's one style you can embrace (in which case I say paint it) but personally I like to keep things visually quiet in the bedroom. Now off to my own son's room to start planning improvements... :)
