Hannah Gordon pruning.help please

this is Hannah Gordon from K&M, 2nd year. Did I do the right thing,? She is leafing out. I pruned her back 3 days ago. Is it too early? We are expecting some light frost off and on for a few weeks. I don't normally prune this early. I am hoping to exhibit her this season ?! Any advice is well appreciated, thank you!

Great, thanks Sheila! I guess I worry too much sometimes lol.

I don't know where you are located in the PNW but I've pruned my roses too. They are leafing out about as much as your Hannah.

I'll keep an eye on the weather forecast and if we get a really, really cold snap I'll throw something over them. Unlikely by the middle of February but you never know.

Hannah was on my list of "Maybe Purchases." I saw it on a list of the Seattle Rose Society "Puget Sound area performers" but have never seen it in person.

Please share pictures as it matures and Good Luck with the exhibition this year.

Thanks Barbara, good to know I'm not alone with pruning early! I live in New Tacoma at about 250-300ft. I got Hannah from K&M on fortuniana rootstock. Not the most ideal for here, but was all I could find at the time. I think she also might have RMV......

She's young and spindly right now. We'll see what happens. She fared better than the rest coming through winter and bloomed her little head off last year. I think you'd like her!

Your roses are spoiled! Or maybe I'm just too lazy to cover them hahaha! I hope yours do great!

    Thanks Sarah.

It doesn't usually get too cold here in the city so my roses are pretty safe and I don't have very many. Protection means if it gets in the low 20's I throw an old sheet over them for the night. That is rare and not sure if it's even required. We're so close to the Sound and Lake Washington. Probably just makes me feel better:)

Why do you think Hannah has RMV? I've heard others on the forum talk about it but I need to go look that up. Is it common in the PNW?

My two cents worth-- the rose is still very small and needs to develop. Next go-round, try pruning lightly to maybe 24" and just eliminate crossing or weak growth for good air circulation.

In Europe where gardens are small and gardeners are trying to cram more roses in, they prune the h*** out of everything. If you have nice deep beds and good spacing there's just no need to do that.

Frequently published photos showing roses pruned down to a nubbin (below 18") are often the result of removal of lots of dieback dead wood. I never find any dead wood here in coastal Z8 Virginia, and if I prune at all my HT's and floribundas end up at about 24".

I saw a volunteer pruning at a public garden near here; didn't recognize her so I asked where she was from. She was from the north of England, and was enthusiastically pruning all the hybrid teas down to 12". I noticed that the volunteers were not touching any of the shrub roses or the Drifts, which was some consolation.

That said, I've never grown Hannah Gordon and I do think individual varieties have different needs. I have come to prune much less, and am happy with the big, full bushes and large amounts of bloom that result from just letting them do their thing!

I saw roses pruned too hard at Rosarie de la hay in Paris in 2014 and they looked so sad and unhappy. Their climbers were glorious but the pruning ruined the OGRs.

barbarag_happy, hahaha! "Pruned the h*** out of everything". Yes, I don't prune back too hard, I killed Lucille Ball doing that. But I probably did prune a bit much. Great advice, thank you!

Barbara, last year she had the typical irregular yellow lines that don't follow leaf veins. It was pretty obvious on a few leaves, but wasn't on all. I knew before ordering that K&M seems to have some infected roses. She did great despite it though. Yes, let's hope it's warmer days ahead!

Happy gardening everyone and many thanks!

Sarah, sorry you saw signs of rose mosaic on her. Hope you let K&M know.

Wow! Really pretty! How tall is it for you?

*Drool* She's gorgeous! Thank you for the pruning advice and the tip too! She looks so happy and healthy in your garden.

For size, I was warned she can be a monster, topping out around 4x6 ? If that's the case, she'll have to come out of her pot at some point hahaha!

When I lived in central FL., my bush was 8'x4'. Up here in NE GA., I fight to keep it under 6'. But to me this is one of the most beautiful roses on the market. I'm very tempted to put in a bed of 10 of these beauties. It might just happen this year. I'll .know for sure what I'm going to do come the 1st part of April. Just think, a 20' wall of Hannah Gordon's.
