Double Record...or not?

My bulb labeled Double Record (from Holland Bulb Farms) opened its first two flowers today, and I'm confused. It only has one layer of petals/sepals, except that one of the flowers has a couple of those weird wimpy inner petals. Is this just a new-bulb-first-bloom thing, or does it look like I got a mislabeled bulb?

It's really pretty and I like it, but the single vs. double flower made me pause.

So good to hear that Sue as it can be discouraging when you look forward to a special flower and then it doesn't happen quite the way imagined. In this case you have some beautiful doubles in your future :) -J

Double Record is one of those bulbs that when you get a good one they're beautiful as is Jody's but they can also end up just a semi double and and not nearly as attractive as they should be. For that reason, I've never bought one. Some pictures of Double Record are just gorgeous and some are so so.

I found that Flaming Peacock is a better substitute (when you can find it) which always gave (at least for me,) nice double flowers even if sometime some years are paler than others. Just a suggestion.....

Thanks for the input. It's a really pretty flower, but I'm a little disappointed that it isn't a big floofy double like the pictures when I ordered it.

Sue, You might get better flowers next year - or not :) I didn't know about the variability of the flowers in this hybrid as mine always had large double flowers. In fact the pictures were taken when it was just opening so, like Donna said, there are some good ones. But knowing that, I would recommend, along with the very elegant Peacock line that Donna mentioned, Elvas, as it is very easy to grow and is a reliable bloomer. If allowed to fill a pot it (different bulbs in the pot) can bloom throughout the year. Aphrodite's flower is gorgeous and huge, however, the plant itself is also huge (bulb, leaves etc.). For me, the diameter of the stem of the flower-scape needed to hold up its dinner-plate size flowers, often exceeds 1.5 inches.So take that into consideration when buying this gorgeous hybrid.

I ordered the three Amadeus line bulbs from RC. Supposedly these flowers are Aphrodite sized, but grow on smaller plants on shorter scapes- in other words big flowers bred for the pot trade. I'm still waiting for my order, so I can't comment on the accuracy of these claims :) but will post when I've grown and flowered them.

Maybe someone else on the list can comment on Amadeus and RC still has them if interested. And yes, don't thank me, I'm always willing to enable :) -J

Thanks Jody! I actually bought Aphrodite, Elvas, and Exotic Peacock last fall, and can't wait to see them bloom. Plus I already had Blossom Peacock. So I do have a nice array of double pinks, even if Double Record doesn't live up to its name!
