Does your pot have drain holes?

Remember, these plants do not grow in the ground. They grow attached to trees. Their roots are exposed to air and rain. If the roots do not get air they will die off.

You must attempt to mimic the conditions the plant grows in naturally. Certainly not in dirt or wet conditions. Their roots are 'drip dry.' Water and let them dry off in the air.

Repot in bark in a pot which drains quickly. Only water when the bark is almost dry.

I have no idea where you live, very important. If in a warm climate, move it to a bright place.

If you live in a cold climate, move to a bright window and keep it warm.

Your plant looks overwatered and will die unless you do something soon.

I have a grow light system for my bonsai that is on for 15 hrs a day and offers a little heat. Based on others' feedback from other forums I've removed the orchid from the pot and found most of the roots to be emaciated and rotten. I then removed much of the wet sphagnum (leaving a little in contact with any surviving roots), and I am letting the roots air dry. I'll give it a day or two to dry out before going and inspecting the roots further. Next step is apparently to remove any dead/rotten roots and cross my fingers!

There are no drain holes in the pot, and the orchid was packed tightly in 100% sphagnum moss. Recipe for disaster, right?

That was my guess. Please read up on growing orchids so you understand the conditions they require. They are not 'dirt plants.'
