I looked through some old threads. Costco had GNs as late as May 2015. Last year, I found a GN on Valentine's day last year. I didn't pick it up because I was planning to move. I don't know why Fremont Costco showed over 100+ citrus in stock last Thursday. They only added a few (less than 5-10) over the weekend. Nothing interesting - a grapefruit and mandarinquat.

Limes, Lmes, and more Limes at Costco Livermore yesterday.... along with a surprise. Star Ruby on Volk ! - - - therefore adding to the tag code list:

"STRVLK"

I was just at redwood City and saw the star Ruby and oroblanco. They also had owari and okatsu wase and a few oranges. So not just limes and lemons.

Junk: I was just commenting that whomever chose the shipment for Livermore went 90% lime. ....Which is kind of nuts since the freezes can get nasty in that locality...!

Thanks for keeping this thread alive! I literally see California honey mandarin at every nursery, what's up with that? Is it the least desirable variety?

One of the CostCo stores I visited yesterday had about a dozen or so citrus trees. Lemons, moro blood oranges, grapefruit, limes, and some others and all were around $20. I was very tempted until I took a good look at them. Unlike some of the nice specimens shown in the above photos, all of these were about 3' in height and very spindly. I could have dealt with that, but looking at their pots, all looked like they had been constantly flooded. The tops of the soil didn't look good with a combination of algae build-up and even some mold.

I've bought over 80 citrus form Costco over the last 8 years or so... never had an issue. But, the warehouse crazies do get a bit carried away throwing and shuffling them around at night. You do want to avoid buying if it looks dead (duh). Having said that,, I've grabbed a couple of [to be saved] specimens that were rather sad looking, ...dropped, / thrown, loose in the pot. I let them settle for a week, fed them and let settle for a few weeks more. They too did just fine. At $18.99 its tough to beat.

They are some great prices, but I'm just about out of room in my yard and I'd like to save some room for some tropical exotics.

Alas, I am out of room too. However, I initiated a musical chairs routine in my yard - ...so I am forcing some space open.

A couple of more codes for the list. The last one was found in the middle of the bunch, requiring the move of a dozen or more before it could be reached. The only one that I saw there!

Dancy Mandarin = DCY

Gold Nugget Mandarin = GNG

Costco Fontana has a bunch of new citrus on the floor. Besides the mandarinquat, I saw some Dancy and owari satsuma. I was only looking for gold nugget (No joy) but also noticed moro blood orange. Fingers crossed my next trip nets a gold nugget.

The only citrus I was looking for was a bearlass which I picked up for 18.99. I bought all my citrus(8 of them) , peach, nectarine, plum and apples there for a total of 13 trees. They are all doing great. All my citrus are in containers and the other trees above in the ground.

Garden grove got another shipment and they have a ton again. I didn't get a chance to look at the tags.

None of the Costco's here carry plants, but I feel pretty lucky because most citrus sells for about $10 at the local home centers.

Costco Fontana has several gold nugget mandarins. Aside from the one I just bought, I saw 2 more for sure and possibly a total of 7. They are way in the back and I needed to ask for assistance in grabbing one as there are way to many other trees in front of them to get to.

You guys are so lucky, it's mostly lime and lemon at my nearby Costco.

They have GN and Satsuma at my Costco but I already have those. Also blood orange trees

Keep_on_gardening, that might be changing as the month goes on. Mostly lemon and lime is how our started out also. I have seen a few people mention GN is starting to show up and not just at Costco.

I have noticed that the Costco's have been getting a fresh shipment just about every other week...

congratz! I went to SJ and Fremont yesterday and didn't see any GNs. I gave up and drove to Gilroy to pick up 2 GNs. Watch, now that I am not looking...I might find it at Costco..and if I see it, I will have to pick one or two up. 7 new citrus (3 kishus, 1 leexnova, 1 tango, 2 GN) isn't too many right?

Junk... you rock! Yikes, 3 SKishus... wow you must be getting ready to set up a citrus/fruit stand. I have found that one variety per property produces much more than enough for personal use. Then again, if a fruit stand is in the plan - go for it!

Junk4us: 3 Kishus? You must really love it? I like the sweetness but dislike the size. It is SO small.

Fireball/molewacker: I'm about to give up and do what junk4us did - drive to Gilroy to pick up whatever I want and end the hunting game.

You won't get any arguments from me. I'm from an hour outside of LA and I love going through Gilroy and Castroville for garlic stuff and artichoke stuff. Is Hollister on the way? Casa de fruita is a pretty amazing place to visit.

Menlo growers happens to be near to the outlets, so yeah, definitely I can make a day trip out of it and shop more than just trees. Thanks for suggesting casa de fruita, looks like a fun place from Yelp. Hopefully I still remember to check it out the next time we drive to LA.

George - Did you pick up a LxN too? I haven't found any personal reviews of the fruit yet. A bit worried since the original person had one good crop in 34 years. So it may take a super long time before I can report back. All the trees went into the ground. Now I have to wait for it to get established.

Keep-on - kids love the kishus plus it's a different ripening time. Plus it produces good fruit in the first year. I had 4 but gave one away. I was near Payless and had to dropped by. Left my credit cards in the car. They had a bunch of tangos on carizo. I found a reed avocado. I hear that for $75, I can get a fruiting one at God's lil acre. Cados and persimmon can be bought more mature for faster fruit. Next year.

Oops forgot about the meiwa kumquat...So 8 new citrus trees in ground this year.

That makes sense, whatever kiddos like. It's always better to feed them fresh fruits than candies or ice cream. I was at Gods lil acre last week. Wow their citrus collection is amazing, but mostly standard sizes though. Saw a Tahoe Gold mandarin tree with a fruit size of an orange, this picture definitively doesn't do its justice.

Let us know how you like the Tahoe gold. I read 1-2 sites where they said that Shasta gold was the favorite out of the gold series.

Sorry, it was Tuan in SoCal that recently got the Tahoe gold. Even as standard, mandarins are typically on the "small" side....About 10 ft.

keep-on, congrats on your find(s) !! Those WN references are generalizations. each cultivar type is different, but in general.... Junk is correct - mandarins are typically on the smaller end of the scale.

Junk- I planted a LxN in 2012 but it struggled after two very cold winters, drought and inadequate feeding. And then in January 2016 I moved it 12 ft. up hill to a more exposed but sunnier spot. The transplant went worse than I had hoped as the root ball tore and a large portion of the feeder roots broke or were cut off. After much TLC and liquid feeding, It was pushing new growth by last fall - but the January 2017 freezes took care of that new growth! It is now pushing several new branches and I expect it to be back to where it was by fall. Maybe fruit next year....

Molewacker - we can compare notes if I get any fruits and the kids don't get to it first. I saw some fruitlets on mine but it's still too early and may drop. Readomg old reviews from Patty, it's supposed to be outstanding. I noticed that it's off the budwood list. Hope you get fruit next year! Definitely want to hear about what you think of it.

Junk4us - thanks, in case you are going, all the GN I saw are at Almaden location. There were a couple of them hiding all the way in the back, so if anything, those are probably available

Home Depot had some olives, figs, Meyers, Mandarins, last week. They weren't looking great ($24.95), but the ones I bought perked up very nicely.
