Where do you eat? Is one of these spaces supposed to be the dining room?

I love your two chairs in the dining area.

I too have questions regarding dining. do you have another dining room? Do you need a dining room? How many do you usually feed?

I know we might seem liking we are harping on the wrong thing, but sometimes when you are truly lost? you miss the big arrow in front of you.

Before making decision on furniture layout - are the windows double or single hung in the room with tv? I agree with cindyberger with large scale table in front of fireplace.

I am basically thinking the only thing that looks good is the tiger rug. The rest I want to replace! :-O :-)

Why do you have a banquette in the corner of the fireplace room? Can it go? How do you use that space?

I think the two chairs in the fireplace room could stay. But your house looks contemporary with a serious mid century modern sensibility, so I would follow that style.

For the TV area, I'd get a sofa and a couple of chairs. Look at West Elm's Peggy sofa and Show Wood chairs. Perhaps the zebra rug could go in there.

when we get to the poor zebra someone else can help. lets decide what you want to do in these areas first. clearly you want a tv seating area. do you have young ones that need a play area? do you prefer to eat regular meals in this area? do you need office/library/ homework space/teen hangout/lounge area space?

Never thought of a smaller rug! That looks great- thank you! I like the large hanging on the wall, too.

@havingfun - zebra (tiger) rug a no-no? I LOVE IT, though :(. However, it is large. I think it might look better in the other room. We have 2 young ones that basically use our dinner table as a craft table (it's in the dining room- not pictured). My husband likes the nook table because it's "practical" and we all do tend to eat there. However, from a design perspective, i hate it. It just looks awkard. Our kitchen which is looking opposite the nook and fireplace, we have an island counter that can fit 3 bar stools. We usually keep 2 there.

Some ideas that might be useful both practically and aesthetically:

Move the zebra into the TV area. Replace those sofas with more modern seating that better suits the house. Your current chairs might work in there as well.

Lose that horrible banquette. Set up the fireplace room with a large (maybe convertible) coffee table that can be used by the kids for crafts while you keep an eye on them from the kitchen or the TV area. Here have a couple of chairs for lounging by the fire after the kids go to sleep, and a couple more that could do double duty as dining chairs.

The Eames-style shell chair is very comfortable, suitable for dining, and totally kid-proof.

That dining nook/banquette thing is extremely awkward, heavy and chunky looking, not to mention completely out of place. It also fights with every single other thing in that room. You have a separate dining room - can you just not set that up as your regular dining space? That way you can get rid of the nook arrangement, and instantly your living area looks 82% better.

hi there, i loved your fire place but sorry to say if you want a great fit for your room the fire place has to shift where you have tv stand in picture 3. The fire place is great but is at the wrong place. After clearing it you can utilize all that space into a fine dining area. here are some picture for your room after you shift your fire place to front wall.
